THEATER | “Fezziwig’s Feast” is a feast for all the senses—not just taste

The Actors Theater of Minnesota is again staging Fezziwig’s Feast at the Wigington Pavilion on Harriet Island this month, and I attended one of the performances. I also had the opportunity to see It’s A Wonderful Life at the Saint Paul Hotel with my son Jay. Each holiday show revisits a familiar story with a new twist and includes dinner served throughout the evening. If you have to make a choice I would recommend going with the story that you want to see, because each provides a very enjoyable evening.

“Silent Night,” silent ball fields: Minnesota Twins are waiting for Santa

A hush has settled on baseball for another year. Soon Target Field will be under a blanket of snow. But be assured that not all is quiet in the offices of the Minnesota Twins. In a move that surprised many, the Twins fired Bill Smith as general manager two weeks ago. Terry Ryan has stepped back into the role that he filled successfully for many years before Smith’s promotion in 2007. Continue Reading

100 losses, two Renes, and other strange records the Minnesota Twins might set this season

We were at a Twins game last week that was announced as Star Wars night. With Star Wars characters helping to change the bases, singing “Take Me Out to the Ball Game,” and ruling the concourses, I felt like I was at a St. Paul Saints game rather than major league baseball. Even with the Jedis in attendance, the Twins could not pull out a win. Continue Reading

THEATER | “A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement” at Plymouth Playhouse: The Church Basement Ladies are back

A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement is the fourth installment of the shows starring the Church Basement Ladies. These shows have done for Lutherans what Nunsense has done for us Catholics: cashing in on the nostalgic memories of the Baby Boomers who love to remember the simpler times. A Mighty Fortress is Our Basement is a production of Troupe America Inc. and is in its premiere run at the Plymouth Playhouse. My first exposure to the Church Basement Ladies was their holiday production: Away in the Basement. As I did at that show, I invited my Lutheran friend to attend with me and she was very helpful. Things a mother pig might be thinking as she gives birth at the Miracle of Birth barn at the Minnesota State Fair

“Miracle,” my ass!

You know, it’s the video cameras that really cross the line here.

Sure, and where’s this crowd going to be when I’m off to the ol’ slaughterhouse next year?

One down, 13 to go. God, I hope that first one wasn’t just the runt.

Pink. Again?!

If one more kid yells BA-RAM-YU!, I’m going to shoot the next piglet straight into his sno-cone.

Behind the scenes as the Minnesota Twins warm up for a game at Target Field

On May 25 I received a pass to cover the Minnesota Twins game for the Twins Cities Daily Planet. The pass that was available to me did not allow access to the press box or the clubhouse. However, I was allowed access to the field for batting practice and pre-game preparations. During batting practice the press are allowed to talk to the players as they come and go from the batting cages. There are very strict parameters that the press have to follow on the field being respectful of the need for the players to get their work in. Unfortunately it rained heavily that day and batting practice was cancelled.
