THEATER | “9 to 5” at the Ordway still has a story to tell

If you are a person who worked in an office in the 1960s or 1970s, you owe yourself a trip to the Ordway to see 9 to 5: The Musical. I was there last night with my sister-in-law and we both were part of that workforce. The age of the audience indicated that we were not the only ones who remembered living the story and seeing it in the 1980 movie and wanted to revisit that great comedy in a theater setting.

Minnesota Twins are experiencing the worst, historically followed by the first

Someone made a comment over the weekend that it must be hard to come up with ideas for a blog right now with the Twins playing so poorly. While I have not been as faithful with my writing as I had hoped, it is not because of the Twins record. Life happens and my days are filled with all that life brings—the happy times, the sad times, the aches and pains, the quiet relaxing days with a good book, time with friends and family, times alone. And woven through all of this is always baseball. Continue Reading

Weather and the Minnesota Twins: You gotta hang on ’til tomorrow

Do you ever have a morning where you just don’t want to go to work? Things just don’t seem right in the world and all you want to do is pull up the blankets and go back to bed. Mother Nature and the Twins both seem to be in a funk this spring. It is no secret that we have had a miserable spring. Every once in a while we see a glimmer of hope—remember Easter Sunday?—only to fall back into the cold and the rain. Continue Reading

THEATER | “To Kill a Mockingbird”: Park Square Theatre preaches the gospel of civil rights

I reread To Kill a Mockingbird last year, 50 years after its publication in 1960. When I heard that Park Square Theatre was staging this production, I knew I wanted to see it brought to life on the stage. This enduring story clearly reminds us all that the struggle for equality has taken a great toll on many who have fought for it and those who have been the victims of discrimination.

Minnesota Twins: The bandwagon is rolling

Spring training is winding down. The Twins ended their games in Fort Meyers on a winning note including two ninth-inning rallies. On Saturday the Twins beat the Red Sox after trailing 8-3 going into the ninth, scoring six runs off Bobby Jenks. I’m sure you remember Jenks from his years pitching for the White Sox. And for those who are wondering, this victory also captured the 2011 Mayor’s Cup for the Twins. Continue Reading

A rainy day for writing, but sunny days ahead for the Minnesota Twins

It is a rainy, windy Sunday morning—a perfect time to stay inside and write, I thought. The challenge is what to write that you want to read. It’s been a busy week for me. I spent lots of time with my grandchildren while my daughter was away at a conference. I forget that when you are with kids they are your clock and your planner. Their world is very small and revolves around them. They have needs and rely completely on the adults in their world to meet those needs and to give them good choices to make. Continue Reading

Spring training blues: Is it better to have played and lost than not to have played at all?

Is it better to have played and lost than not to have played at all? That is the question that popped into my mind while I was thinking about my blog for this week. The Twins had a four-game losing streak last week. Mind you, this is spring training where the games really don’t mean anything, but still after the fourth loss I was feeling a little melancholy. I know this goes against everything my mother taught me about the fact that we can’t win it all and that we love baseball just for the love of the game. It is still more fun to win! So much for my very altruistic feelings about baseball. Continue Reading
