First test of 2013 Minnesota frac sand law is successful

The owner of a controversial Houston County silica sand mine was notified Monday by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) that he must stop mining and apply for a DNR Silica Sand Mining Trout Stream Setback Permit. The Erickson silica sand mine in Houston County’s Yucatan Township is within a mile of Ferndale Brook, a designated trout stream. A future for the Midtown Farmers Market grows more certain

The Midtown Farmers Market, well into its 12th year of operation at the corner of Lake St. and Hiawatha Ave., is a bustling place that attracts shoppers from the surrounding neighborhoods as well as other parts of South Minneapolis. On Saturday mornings and Tuesdays afternoons, its vendors come from Minnesota and Wisconsin with home-grown or handmade items for sale. Musicians entertain people who have stopped to rest or to eat food cooked in booths or food trucks. Many people consider it a neighborhood gem.The future of the market has been in question for a couple of years, but recent collaboration between the Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS), which owns the land, the Corcoran Neighborhood Organization (CNO), which runs the market, and a developer, L&H Station Group, has paved the way for preserving it as part of a larger, multistage project. With the City of Minneapolis getting out of the shipping business at this year’s end, development staff are gearing up to offer the Upper Harbor site to businesses in partnership with parks, hoping they’ll hire Northside residents. And one private developer asked them to think about long-term leasing instead, since “nothing is forever.”
