Storytelling in the snow

Last year’s TC Media Alliance forum had low attendance because of sun—such nice weather that people stayed home to enjoy it. This year the problem was snow, falling quietly but persistently, slushing up the roads, skidding cars, making it easy to say, “I think I’ll stay home today.”

Riverside Plaza — history in the (re)making

Of all the landmarks in Minneapolis—from the Spoonbridge and Cherry sculpture to Minnehaha Falls, the Stone Arch Bridge or the Basilica of St. Mary—few are as poorly understood or generate as much debate as Riverside Plaza.  Encompassing several city blocks in the Cedar-Riverside area, Riverside Plaza is a set of high-rise residential towers, built in the early 1970s, that has created its own distinct micro-community of several thousand residents within its walls.  Many know the area to be the center of the Somali and East African community in Minnesota, but what is often lost is an understanding of that community—and this place—within the broader history of Minneapolis.

MUSIC | Killer musicianship from Kilometers Davis on their debut, Reading Books About How It’s Done  by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet • Don’t you just love it when all you’ve got to go on in writing about a band is the music? Sure, when you happen to be hanging at a club and somebody hits the stage, that’s what you get-how good or bad they play, what the name is and, on an exceptional night, an attractive lady’s phone number before calling it a night and hitting the bricks. Putting coverage generally together calls for considerably more. Like a bio, press release and, oh, being able to read the promo CD and at least see a listing of which song is titled what. Nothing doing with the group Kilometers Davis and their album Reading Books About How It’s Done.Hebrew priestess by Anne Hamre, Minnesota Women’s Press • In 2009, Sharon Jaffe of Minneapolis graduated with the first class of Hebrew priestesses in over 2,000 years. MUSIC | Mark Mallman’s Marathon 3: “This is just for fun” by Jay Gabler, TC Daily Planet • He made it! Photos from all four days of Marathon 3, including the final hours last night. MUSIC | Ra Ra Riot start a fire (figuratively speaking) at the Varsity by Natalie Gallagher, TC Daily Planet • One thing’s for sure: Ra Ra Riot certainly know how to put on a show. Their show at the Varsity Theater on Thursday night showcased the standard pop energy that gave the Syracuse, New York band its name. Adding to the energy of the night were the two openers, the atmospheric We Barbarians from Long Beach, California and Chikita Violenta-a surprising and wonderful indie rock band from Mexico City. Minnesota Memory Walk for Alzheimer’s research by Amanda Noventa, TC Daily Planet • Minnesota walkers wore purple to walk on Hyland Park on September 25, and not because the Vikings were playing. The walkers are working to win an even bigger battle than the Superbowl-they want to win the battle against a deadly disease that affects more U.S. families every year. The annual Memory Walk is the nation’s largest event for the Alzheimer’s Association, raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer care and research programs. Since 1989, the event has raised more than $300 million. The Twin Cities has the largest of the eight walks in Minnesota. With 5.3 million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease, nearly 100,000 people are right here in Minnesota. Continue Reading

THEATER | Frank Theatre’s Eclipsed tells the story of women during the Liberian Wars by Sheila Regan, TC Daily Planet • Last weekend I attended a wonderful play called Eclipsed, produced by Frank Theatre at the Playwrights’ Center. Written by Danai Gurira, the play tells the story of women surviving during the Liberian Civil Wars. MUSIC | Local Natives’ Andy Hamm: They belong in small clubs, but they’re coming to First Ave by Leslie Kruempel, TC Daily Planet • Local Natives are on a quick ascent. The LA-based band opened for Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros at the Varsity Theater last November, before returning to Minneapolis this May to headline a sweaty sold-out show at the 400 Bar. On October 1st they’ll make the leap to the First Avenue Mainroom in support of their debut album Gorilla Manor. Continue Reading
