Blackbird Café is coming to 38th and Nicollet, occupying the corner storefront in a building that has been mostly vacant since the Lander Group’s proposed “38”, a mixed use project with eco-friendly condos, went the way of so many other projects on the drawing board in 2005. Continue Reading

Fool Me Twice: the rise of the American lumpenproletariat, part III

It’s fall now in this, our year of discontent, and of late I’ve begun spotting members of a species whose proliferation I first witnessed visiting my brother in Georgia this past summer.

I’m speaking of the growing numbers of what appear to be middle-class adults standing on sidewalks along commercial boulevards and waving placards for some retail outfit located just across the par Continue Reading

MUSIC | Khaira Arby sings of women’s rights at the Global Roots Festival by Sheila Regan, TC Daily Planet • Malian singer Khaira Arby begins every concert with a song called “Salou” that is an invocation, though she doesn’t stress the importance of a particular religion. The spiritual singer, who is on tour in North America for the first time after 20 years as a professional singer in her home country of Mali, believes it doesn’t matter the name you call God-whether it’s Jesus or Mohommed or some other name-matters. The important thing, she believes, is to live a good and spriritual life. “There is only one God, even though there are many religions,” she said in an interview. MUSIC | Nikki Schultz’s Lost and Found (and Lost Again) is an excellent offering by a strong performer by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet • My first time experiencing gifted vocalist Nikki Schultz, she was at the Cedar Cultural Center this summer, singing backup in soul balladeer Chastity Brown’s band for the release of the High Noon Teeth album. She wasn’t so much background as a healthy part of what made the music work as splendidly as it did. Distinct timbre, a real passion for emoting and, in general, a strong store of entertaining energy. Forum focuses on potential for clean energy jobs by Barb Kucera, Workday Minnesota • One solution to the nation’s unemployment crisis is the creation of clean energy jobs, but to achieve that goal everyone must be involved in the effort, participants in a Congressional forum agreed. Fool me twice: The rise of the American lumpenproletariat, part II

The hand-wringing has begun. How can American citizens vote to take Congressional control away from the Democratic Party and hand it back to the Republican Party, the very organization that ran the country into the ground during the decade and a half when it controlled either one or both chambers of Congress? How can voters be so blind to their own self-interest?
