Minnesota’s princess tradition: Maybe we all just want our heads carved in butter.

Little girls in Minnesota grow up knowing who Princess Kay of the Milky Way is—that darling of the State Fair immortalized in churned creamy goodness, wholesome as a glass of fresh Minnesota milk. We also grow up believing there’s nothing weird about having your head carved in butter. If anything, it’s something to aspire to.In the middle of the country, 11 years into the new millennium, we still hold high that idea of a dairy princess—as well as both the human and butter embodiment of it—as something integral to our Minnesotan culture.
