On November 24th, a grand jury in St. Louis County, Missouri announced that they would not indict the white police officer who shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old black man. Less than a week later, a grand jury in New York decided not to indict a white police officer who killed an unarmed black man named Eric Garner with an illegal chokehold, in front of witnesses and video cameras. On Saturday, a group organized by ISAIAH gathered in the parking lot of the Sears store in St. Paul on Rice Street, west of the State Capitol complex to seek better working conditions for Sears workers, especially at this holiday season.
The movement to ban same-sex conversion therapy in Minnesota picked up the support of GLAAD (formerly the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and other key GLBT organizations.
On the first day, there was a meeting.
It was a Citizens for Sustainability meeting in October. Dan Doerrer, associate pastor of Nativity Church, was invited to attend by members of the group. There he connected with Rev. Susan Mullin, director of faith formation for Faith United Methodist Church.
The Minnesota State High School League passed a policy on Thursday morning that provide a framework for schools to allow transgender students to participate in high school extracurricular activities including athletics.
One day I sat down to write in my journal. I typed the date and then the year— 2914. I looked at the year a couple of times and thought, “That doesn’t look right.” Finally I grasped that it was 900 years from now. Nine hundred years!!! Not just the future, but THE FUTURE. Holy cow! I felt the wonder I always feel when I contemplate primordial, ancient or medieval times—The passing of time. I started wondering about my great-great-great-great, etc. grandchildren. Who would they be? How would people live? Would people pair up into couples or would they form intimate pods of threes and fours? Would there still be races? Would Minneapolis still be here? How much of North America would be under water? Would there have been a nuclear holocaust? It was a strange, mystical experience.
Just before the Minnesota State High School League’s proposed vote in early October on a trans-inclusive high school athletics policy, support poured in for transgender students. Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges, council members Barbara Johnson and Elizabeth Glidden, Sen. Scott Dibble, the president of Minnesota’s pro-soccer club Minnesota United, the Star Tribune Editorial Board, and the state’s teachers union Education Minnesota all wrote statements in support of transgender students.
The full-page newspaper ad that the Child Protection League (CPL) took out in the Star Tribune, Duluth News Tribune, Mankato Free Press, St. Cloud Times and the Winona Daily News is not the only medium that the conservative anti-LGBT group is using to frighten Minnesotans about young transgender athletes. Late in November, just before Thanksgiving, Abdullahi ali Anshur was murdered by al Shabaab in Mogadishu. In what must have been a planned execution, they stopped his car and sprayed it with bullets.
