A new era for Dogtown, as store changes hands

Back in the days when corner grocery stores abounded, Beltrami Neighborhood residents had many choices, including Delmonico’s, Maple Leaf, Spano’s, Rusciano’s, and Schullo’s.Through the years, most of the small stores disappeared. Last month one of the oldest family-owned groceries, Delmonico’s Italian Foods, 1112 Summer St. NE, changed hands, when co-owners and cousins Terry Delmonico and Bob Delmonico decided to sell the store and let Terry retire.Founded in 1919 by Vincenzo and Anna Delmonico, the store was well-known for its homemade Italian sausage, fried peppers, calzones, and pizzelles. Even though the store is not closing, some residents nonetheless say they see it as the end of an era, in a beloved Northeast neighborhood once known as Little Italy.Maple Hill historyEarly Maple Hill residents included many Italian immigrants who settled there in the 1920s and 1930s. Later renamed the Beltrami Neighborhood after Italian explorer Giacomo Constantino Beltrami, its borders are Broadway to the north, Central Avenue to the west, Spring Street to the south and Johnson Street to the east. The Maple Hill name came from an 1857 private cemetery owned by the Dudley P. Chase Grand Army of the Republic Post. Continue Reading

GLOBAL GROCERIES | Sports, whiskey, cool technology and food

I got the Call of the Wild late last month. The Minnesota Wild invited journalists and local VIPs to the “See the Big Picture” event, to show off new digital renovations at the Xcel Energy Center. Of course, when new fancy technology isn’t enough to bring in the curious, just add free food and drink and a connection to St. Paul city pride.

Residents weigh in on 2225 East Lake development

Almost 150 people turned out April 3 to hear about proposed plans by Hennepin County to purchase and redevelop 2225 East Lake, the 6.5 acre property between the Lake Street light rail station and the YWCA. Since that time, the County has convened 2 working groups of government staff, development practitioners, and local residents to work through issues related to Sustainable development and Bike/Walk/Traffic connections within the development. Each of these groups has met once, and CNO gathered feedback from residents who participated, including Corcoran residents Jane St. Clair, Tami Traeger, John Paul, Benjamin Tsai, Billy Weber, Gerry Tyrrell, Heidi Traore, Jim Walsh, and Peggy Knapp.Attention paid to bike/walk/traffic and transit users, connections and facilities. “(Fixing) the Lake and Hiawatha intersection is CRUCIAL to the success of any development on this site and unacceptable in its current car-centric design.”“I am disappointed that the office building will be only 5 stories even though CNO is OK with 6 to 10. “If you’re not at the table, you’re on the menu.”

I spend almost all my time attempting to figure out how I can braid storytelling and organizing. I’ve been attempting to not just organize communities around ideas, but also organize ideas, making sense of the din around us, the tunnel vision that too often exists in the justice world, the lack of recognition of the ties that bind injustice together, and the ways and whys we too often ignore who we are for what we do. Twin Cities Veg Fest shows eating vegetarian doesn’t mean losing taste

When Sal Kravik became a vegan 12 years ago, she didn’t eat the way she does now.”When I first changed my diet … there were so few options,” Kravik said. “Vegan cheesecake was not a thing.”Now Kravik volunteers for Compassionate Action for Animals (CAA) and wants people to understand that living the vegan lifestyle doesn’t mean eating bad tasting food. And the word is spreading. The nonprofit, which advocates empathy for animals and a move towards plant-based diets, held their third annual Twin Cities Veg Fest on Sept. 28 at the University of Minnesota with record high attendance. About 2,300 people attended the festival, which hosted a variety of vegetarian and vegan vendors. The Herbivorous Butcher, which creates vegan substitute meat, made their debut at Veg Fest this year.
