Though online shopping is bigger than ever before, the bricks-and-mortar retail industry in the United States remains huge—and it’s tremendously important to the economy of Minnesota, home of thousands of independent retailers as well as international giants like Target and Best Buy. On October 30, Caitlin Kelly—a New York journalist who’s the author of Malled: My Unintentional Career in Retail—visited the University of Minnesota to address the conference “Retail Connect: Who’s Minding the Store?” Continue Reading

At the Twin Cities Daily Planet, we’re an edited news publication—but that’s where the similarities between us and traditional journalists end. We believe that there’s more knowledge to be found in our communities than can be found in any one newsroom, and to that end we aim to empower Twin Cities residents to tell their own story. Architecture is, of course, an art—but sometimes architects like to try their hand at artworks that don’t need to be load-tested. Jan Elftmann, best known as the Twin Cities’ art car queen (that’s her you’ve seen waving from the back of her Cork Truck), is curating a show at the 801 Gallery featuring work by 801 Lofts architect Garth Rockcastle as well as architects Peter Brown and Mark Kritz. Also exhibiting work in the show will be Aldo Moroni, Keith Holmes, and Laura Migliorino—a photographer who was hired by Rockcastle 10 years ago to photograph the building, and will be showing her images from that shoot.
