Our Savior’s Community Services serves ‘Beer for a better world’

Our Savior’s Community Services is woven into the mission in the Phillips neighborhood of Minneapolis, meeting the needs of those people who are facing homelessness, giving helping hands to the immigrants and refugees. The independent non-profit, which started as a community outreach effort to Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, helps with English classes and preparation for citizenship, and provides an emergency shelter and transitional housing for those without a place to stay. In a new wrinkle, Our Savior’s mission will harness the social power of beer to promote the work of the organization and raise some funds.KFAI’s Dale Connelly talked with Our Savior’s Community Services grants specialists Kathleen Olsen. All aboard! Anniversary of the passenger train sees an upswing in rail plans

This is the anniversary of the start of the first passenger-carrying railway, the Swansea-Mumbles Railway in Wales in 1807. The tracks were laid to move limestone and other minerals to the docks at Swansea for shipping. The idea to retrofit a horse-drawn rail car to accommodate people was revolutionary. People apparently enjoyed the trip – the line continued for just over 150 years and in addition to equine locomotion, passengers through the decades enjoyed traveling under power provided by steam, sails, and electricity.
