A small portion of the City of Lakes Loppet, is the SW Journal Snow Sculpture Contest. It is configured to allow teams five hours to shape blocks of packed snow, four feet on each side and eight feet high into whimsical representations of the team’s imagination. There are cash prizes for the top three judged entries. There is no fee to enter, but a deposit is refunded if the team makes an attempt to sculpture the snow block. The deposit helps to ensure that an effort is made. Continue Reading

The lake had 12 to 15 inches of ice, the sky held some strong winds, which turned into healthy gusts for the 12th annual Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival on Saturday January 19, 2013.

For nineteen years a festival celebrating Caribbean culture has operated under the banner of Twin Cities Carifest. The festival is held on the fourth weekend of July. A indoor Friday Dance Party kicks off the festivities, with an outdoor gathering the next day along the West River Parkway between Plymouth Avenue and Broadway Avenue. Continue Reading
Last year at the first Northern Spark I was impressed with the event(s) and I had hoped to take in more this year. Last year was spread out in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. This year no St. Paul sites were included, but there is every indication that St. Paul will join Minneapolis again in 2013 in celebrating a Dusk to Dawn extravaganza. Continue Reading
MayDay Parade, Ceremony, and Festival was postponed one week due to weather, but the celebration was as festive as possible on the Second Sunday in May. As delightful as MayDay is for someone like me to photograph, there is the whole dimension of sound I can not capture, specifically the musicians that participate with their audio talent. MayDay really should be experienced!
