By the time you’re reading this, you probably made it to work (finally!) and are now stuck at your cube or you’re hibernating near a source of high heat bracing for Winter Storm Astro. From Monday through Tuesday, Mother Nature is expected to dump up to 10 inches of snow in the northern states of Montana and Dakotas through our beloved Minnesota. Continue Reading
We must start by addressing the most Jewish elephant ever to grace a room ( or in this case, a synagogue) : What the heck was Mel Brooks, iconic comedian, writer, actor, singer, and curmudgeon, doing at the Temple of Aaron in St. Paul, Minnesota? Continue Reading
University of Minnesota tutors and volunteers took a group of 25 North Minneapolis Hmong refugee youth out trick-or-treating last Friday. This is a Community Voices submission and is moderated but not edited. The opinions expressed by Community Voices contributors are their own and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the TC Daily Planet. The tradition of taking Hmong refugee kids out trick-or-treating started in 2005. A group of Hmong refugees had just arrived in the United States from a Thai refugee camp. One day they reported hearing the strangest story: That one day out of the year, they could walk up to someone’s house, mumble some noises, and the person would throw candy at them. These Hmong refugee students said that of course they were way too sophisticated to believe such a ridiculous story. We told them it was true, and took them out for their first Halloween trick-or-treat in their lives.Every year since then volunteers have taken Hmong refugee students out for Trick-Or-Treat.This year, 25 refugee youth put on face paint in the basement of St. Continue Reading
Tomorrow, November 4, is election day. If you are reading this, I hope you go to vote, if you have not already. I am going to tell you about a bunch of things I think you should do this week. When we show up around town, participate, co-create and enjoy our neighbors, our community, our culture, and our arts, we immeasurably improve the spaces in which we tread. Continue Reading
As much as we don’t want anyone to lose his or her dog, sometimes it happens. Despite our best intentions and our years of dog-owning experience, sometimes our dogs get loose, especially around holidays like the 4th of July (thank you, fireworks) and Halloween (frequent opening and closing of doors, scary masks, constant doorbell ringing, etc.). For many people, it’s one of the most anticipated nights of the year – filled with the magic of costumes, the sweetness of treats and plenty of family fun. But for our beloved pets, Halloween might not be such a celebration. This is a Community Voices submission and is moderated but not edited. The opinions expressed by Community Voices contributors are their own and do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the TC Daily Planet. Before putting on your costume and filling the candy bowl on October 31, please make sure that your pet has a safe space indoors to spend the evening. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States both strongly recommend that pets spend the evening in a familiar, quiet room away from the commotion at the front door. This is especially important for dogs and cats, who could become frightened or stressed by the strange smells, noises, and decorations and behave unpredictably as a result. Leaving your pet out in the yard is not a good idea. For cat owners, Halloween can be especially terrifying. Continue Reading
I got to know Saint Paul and I got to know Bob Dylan because I got to know Bill Danielson. Bill owned the Pink Pizza Shack at Hiawatha and Lake in Minneapolis. In 1957 it was a hangout for me and my friends. Bill and his wife, MaryAnn, did pretty well there, but he wanted to be in Saint Paul, his hometown. He sold the Pizza Shack to brothers Duane and Lonnie Anderson, who changed the name to Dulono’s. Continue Reading
Every time I look at the Almanac arts calendar, I realize how much I’m missing. It’s not that I am not doing anything, although I have spent some evenings at home (doing work, of course, right?), and I have been spotted a couple of times within the boundaries of the other Twin. It’s just that there’s too much going on and too many great creatives lighting up the night and day skies of the Capital City, in every neighborhood and on every day of the week. And each week it is hard to make recommendations among some great events. Continue Reading
