On the radar1. Back for fifths, the Twin Cities Literary Death Match returns to the Twin Cities Thursday night for a new round of fightin’ words that usually don’t end up in bloodshed. The Australian Pink Floyd Show is like the Glee tour in its insane popularity and classic rock covers. This world tour features the use of 3D stereographic technology—whatever that is. 3. The largest of its kind since 1996, the Walker’s new exhibition, Graphic Design: Now in Production, explores the profession that’s become so much more than that since the turn of the century.4. In the new exhibit for the Minnesota Artists Exhibition Program, Jennifer Danos, Natasha Pestich, and Marcus Young take “three approaches that play with and disrupt the museum site” while investigating the concept of Semblances. You might just want to see for yourself, starting with the opening reception at the Minnesota Institute of the Arts on Thursday.5. Who IS that, and what have we learned?

October 27 marks the first anniversary of the feature “Who is that?” The first person to be profiled was Rob Callahan, but he wasn’t the inspiration for the column: that was Jon Davis. The busy musician, with his unmissable beard and distinctive dance style, seems to show up at one venue or another almost every night, and I kept finding myself wondering, “Who is that guy?” Now I know–and so do you. Twin Cities TOSCA honors Twin Cities Daily Planet and others for contributions to the arts

On Thursday night, Twin Cities Media Alliance executive director Jeremy Iggers and I were on hand at the Nina Bliese Gallery to accept a TOSCAR award from Exploring TOSCA publisher Gail Weber. TOSCA is an acronym for Theater, Opera, Shakespeare, Culture, and Art, and about every year, Weber chooses one individual or organization in each of those five categories for recognition with a TOSCAR. With a slew of national and local bands rising to the stage (Andrew WK, 4onthefloor, 2 Live Crew) and drink specials–and not to mention blood and guts–galore, it’ll be your zombie nightmare come true.2. The new Cowles Center is just a few weeks old, but just in time for the annual SAGE Awards for Dance (appropriately named for Sage Cowles). A public reception sponsored by Surly Beer to follow at the Red Stag Supperclub.3. Music and movies—can’t have one without the other. The two come together for Sound Unseen, and will feature guests like Patty Schemel (ex-drummer of Hole). Bonus: Twin Cities Daily Planet’s Jim Brunzell is a programmer of the festival.4. It’s been awhile (ahem, seven years) since Aretha Franklin belted it at Mystic Lake Casino. “Southern Touch”: Utku Fashion presents its first runway show of fashion designers in the Twin Cities

Utku Fashion, inspired by the expression of ancient Peruvian textiles and their prestigious historical significance, aims to be a bridge for Latin American designers and to facilitate the entry of their designs into the US market for the first time in the Twin Cities on October 20 through an event called “Southern Touch.” At its first fashion show, Utku Fashion will present two designers, whose creations differ in style. One will show textiles hand-made from alpaca hair while the second will display jewelry pieces made from silver and with Incan motifs. The Peruvian-born founder Marian Sánchez, who has business and cultural experience in fashion, has always had a desire to import the distinctive artistic styles of her native country, and introduce them to the potential of the Minnesota market. “For me, the best way to appreciate a design has always been by seeing it worn. After a two-year expansion project designed by its original architect Frank Gehry, the Weisman Art Museum reopens to the public on Sunday with an opening day celebration called WAMdemonium! and featuring such wild and crazy activities as…um, yoga?2. Yeppers, it’s Halloween season again, and that means the Soap Factory’s Haunted Basement—perhaps the only haunted house in America to be advertised as “conceptually unique”—is opening for business. Watch for Heidi Schatz’s report in the Daily Planet; I don’t care how many artists are involved, I’m not going down there.3. Continue Reading
