There are two community events planned in the Standish-Ericsson neighborhood this week.SHORELINE CLEAN-UPOn Thursday, May 16, volunteer for an hour to perform a quick clean-up of the Lake Hiawatha shoreline. SENA will supply: Bags, cotton gloves, and grabber/pickup tools.You supply: You, in shoes/boots that can get dirty, and long pants to protect legs when walking through brush.To show their appreciation for taking care of the neighborhood, Buster’s on 28th is offering to buy the first 12oz beer/pop afterwards for all participants.“Meet some new neighbors, clean the lake, and get a free drink,” urges SENA staff member Bob Kambeitz . “It’s a win, win, win! NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Ward 12 candidate forum set for April 11

Get to know the candidates running for the Ward 12 Minneapolis Council Member position.The Standish-Ericsson Neighborhood Association (SENA), the Nokomis East Neighborhood Association (NENA), and the League of Women Voters, will host a candidates’ forum on Thursday, April 11 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Roosevelt High School Media Center (4029 28th Ave. S.). All candidates running for Ward 12 council member have been invited to participate, including incumbent Sandra Colvin Roy (DFL) and Andrew Johnson (DFL). The public is invited to attend and submit questions for the candidates. NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Join Friends of Roosevelt Library, next meeting set for April 10

As the Roosevelt Library renovation nears completion, a group of local residents are coming together to support the library as “Friends.”The next meeting on the newly formed Friends of Roosevelt Library will be on Wednesday, April 10 at 6:30 p.m. at the SENA office (1830 E. 42nd St.).What do Friends groups do?- Promote existing library programs and activities and promote the value of their library.- Raise money through book sales, special events, and joint membership dues.- Grant funds to the library for programs, collections, and special projects.- Host book clubs and public events.- Work with their library liaison to determine how best to support the Library.- Collaborate with the Friends of HCL so we can best support local Friends groups and the whole Library system. In Hennepin County, there are 41 libraries and 38 local Friends groups (soon to be 41 Friends groups).  Groups all work to raise money for the library but are all unique…- Some groups are brand new and others are more than 50 years old.- Some groups have four board members and others have more than 12.- Most groups hold 2-4 book sales each year.- Most groups meet monthly but some meet less frequently.- Groups raise from $2,000 to over $15,000 each year.- Last year, local Friends groups granted almost $144,000 to HCLLIBRARY CONSTRUCTION UPDATEThe Roosevelt Library construction is well underway and the meeting room addition has been completed. Interior walls are finished and painted, wood trim has been installed and refurbished windows have been hung. The building’s exterior tuck pointing and sidewalk installation are also complete, and bike racks and monument sign base have been installed. The grand reopening is scheduled for June 1, 2013. NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | New school to move into Northrup building while Northrup School remains at Ericsson building

A new school is moving into the neighborhood. Its name may cause some confusion with an existing school.Currently, the Ericsson building at 4315 31st Ave. S is home to the Northrup School, a magnet school (not a community school) which moved there in 2005. The Ericsson school was closed by the school district because of declining enrollment. It had dropped to less than 200 students, while the Northrup program didn’t have enough room at the Northrup building and had a waiting list. Continue Reading
