MUSIC REVIEW | Teengirl Fantasy at the 7th Street Entry: A case for the electronic music scene

I was really excited for Teengirl Fantasy at 7th Street Entry on August 31 show because I’ve been digging the electronic scene lately and I was definitely not let down. The crowd comprised of the (very sparse) 90s-throwback-video game-electronica culture that’s seen around the country. For whatever reason, Minneapolis has yet to embrace the scene, as seen by Elite Gymnastics’ all but total shunning by local media outlets. I saw mesh crop tops and chunky platform shoes and suspenders with little smiley faces on them, clothes so gaudy that they’re good, and streamlined sportswear paired with cutoff jeans and a flannel tied around the waist. It’s this kind of culture that Minneapolis is in dire need of. Not necessarily fashion-wise, but music-wise. Think industrial video game electronic music. That’s the scene we need.

MUSIC REVIEW | Yeasayer at First Avenue: Not all smoke and mirrors

This is the review that may not have been. My dad promised me that he would take me to the Yeasayer show on August 24th, but conveniently forgot and went fishing up north instead. I was so close to not getting in that it felt like I was Indiana Jones sliding beneath a quickly closing metal door. That close. But I grabbed my hat at the last second and I got into the show.

MUSIC PREVIEW | Yeasayer: Your future congressmen with a supercalifragilawesomedope live show coming to First Avenue

All good naysayers! Quiet down! Because Yeasayer is coming to First Avenue on August 24 in support of their new album, Fragrant World. The band’s third studio album was recently leaked by Yeasayer themselves via a sort of video scavenger hunt. Each track was hidden somewhere across the World Wide Web and was also accompanied by a unique vignette created by Yoshi Sodeoka. This decision was made in order to “tell the story before our mouths can spit.” The songs were only up for audio and visual enjoyment for 72 hours, but the album in all its glory released on August 21.

MUSIC REVIEW | Beirut chill out at Cabooze Outdoor Plaza

Ah, the sweet scent of sweaty scenesters in the summer. This—which is actually surprising to me—was my third time seeing Beirut in concert. I’m not a huge Beirut fan, but I always end up seeing them when they come to town. Now they’re neck-and-neck with Gardens & Villa for the title of most-frequently-seen-by-Lindsay-LaBarre. A very coveted position indeed. A first for me though was the venue. I’d never had the pleasure of seeing a band at the Cabooze Outdoor Plaza up until now, and I can say that I was overall pleased with the place. It didn’t strike me as specifically better or worse than any other venue that I’ve been to. One note though is that the bars on either side of the crowd don’t offer water cups and necessitate for the purchase of bottled water in order to stay hydrated. That’s all. Bring a water bottle if you see a show there. The crowd was mostly populated by young adults probably from around my age to the late 20s with a peppering of middle-aged people at the back of the crowd and various people from the ages in between. There were also, like, one or two kids there with a mom wearing a maxi dress and a dad wearing a Jason Mraz hat.

MUSIC REVIEW | Rock the Garden 2012: The Hold Steady, Trampled By Turtles, Doomtree, tUnE-yArDs, and Howler on the hill

This year’s Rock the Garden was rather local-heavy, so it seemed only natural that the local band that’s been creating quite the local buzz of late was first up on the bill. That band is Howler. I may be biased in saying this, but they are not to be underestimated by their age (which, mind you, is not that young at all). I’ve seen them once before at their Varsity Theater show and so I have a bit of a comparison point.

MUSIC REVIEW | Vita.mn’s SXSW Send-Off: Hours of rock, sweat, and cheers

In the beginning … I introduced myself. My name is Lindsay LaBarre and if you don’t know who I am, I run a concert review blog entitled My Mom Is My Concert Buddy, so entitled because I end up going to a lot of concerts with my mom. This has to do with 18+ rules and all that jazz. So anyways, here I am to entertain you on the lovely whereabouts of Friday, March 2 at First Avenue.

MUSIC | Best New Bands of 2011 at First Avenue: A local mix

Greetings Daily Planet readers, I am Lindsay LaBarre. I’m a sixteen-year-old concert blogger/music fan and I hail from the beautiful habitat that is suburbia. I am the creator and sole member of a concert blog entitled My Mom Is My Concert Buddy. If you know anything about me from my blog, you know that I’m always glued to the barrier and always insanely early. But this time I got to last last Wednesday night’s Best New Bands show at First Avenue after the doors opened and I sat in the balcony. It was actually pretty nice though. Up there, it’s like a whole new world (a dazzling place I never knew … ). It’s an extremely advantageous spot for creeping on people, and I actually got to talk to my mom during the show for once. I’m not converted to be a balcony frequenter, but I think I’ll hang out there a bit more often. Plus, the newly-implemented-for-this-show members area was pretty fab.
