Day tripping in Northfield: What book are you reading?

This year summer has been about finally reading those books that have spent too many months untouched on the shelf, evenings and weekends spent at the grill, and glorious warm, slow, sunny moments strung together with day trips to great places within a few hours drive of the Twin Cities. We hike for a few hours, grab a cone or a root beer float, and come home feeling like we’ve taken Thoreau’s advice to live deliberately and deep, and to suck out all of the marrow (and ice cream) of life. Communities in greater Minnesota, like St. Cloud, St. James, Willmar, and Worthington, are also experiencing huge influxes of Latinos and Somalis. By 2020 the state will also have more people 65 and older than school-aged children for the first time in Minnesota’s history, according to a January state demographer’s office presentation. Remembering Maya Angelou, an influential legend

Yesterday, May 28th,my day started out like many others before it. I tuned into WBGO and heard the voice of the host of Mid-Day Jazz, Rhonda Hamilton. Instantly I could sense sadness in her tone, and then she said it: “Dr. Maya Angelou has passed at the age of 86.”Nothing could have prepared me for that moment. She was a phenomenal woman, prolific writer, poet, and civil rights activist, among many other things. What I will remember most is hearing her talk in Minneapolis at the State Theatre on October 23, 2012, as part of a series of talks presented by the Star Tribune, called Unique Lives, and Experiences. That was the last time I saw her. Continue Reading

A great tree fell: Reflections on Maya Angelou’s passing

My girl and I are facing some hard times, some sort of predictable challenges that come with being a young woman but with a bent that is worrisome to me. Continue Reading
