I was starting to think that I knew every restaurant on the Avenue, but clever Green Line tipsters are always turning me on to ones I have yet to hear of. One such place is Thai Cafe which I’ve passed by many times, but had never noticed. It’s at 371 University, which is very close to the northeast corner of Western and University — smack dab in Little Mekong. The restaurant has a clean and utilitarian feel about the place decorated with pictures of meals they offer on the walls. I always find that helpful to see pictures of the dishes, especially at a place I haven’t been to before. The staff is all warm and welcoming, and if you are driving there is parking lot in the back.
I got the Basil Stir Fry with shrimp (sorry mangrove swamps!) and a coconut juice. It was really good, and has that great mix of salty and sweet that comes with first-rate Thai food. They have a spicy scale that goes from 1-5, and I went with 3. If I had to do it over again, I’d probably do 4, but the 3 was by no means bland. From glancing around the walls, the next time(s) that I go I’ll be getting the sour pork ribs, sweet and sour fried fish, and fried fish lab.
They are in the thick of construction on this section of University so plan a date to Thai Cafe today!
