One of the public policy discussions currently underway in Minneapolis involves transit options in general and streetcars in particular. Proposals are on the table to bring streetcars back to busy routes through the city, and several of the 2013 Mayoral candidates have weighed in, both pro and con.
The transit history of the Twin Cities includes a once-vast streetcar network which was dismantled in the 1950’s under controversial circumstances.
John Diers spent many years working for Metro Transit and is now a transit historian. His books are Twin Cities by Trolley, written with Aaron Isaacs, and The St. Paul Union Depot. John spoke with The Morning Blend’s Terry Carter about the history of public transit in Minnesota. [Audio below]
