I was making fish tacos on Monday, and still needed limes and corn tortillas. I remembered someone somewhere had mentioned a Latin American grocery on University, and I opted to go searching for it instead of making another trip to the grocery store. The name is Mi Linda Tierra (My Beautiful Land), and I found it easily just next door to the side parking lot of the new Frogtown Square development on the northeast corner of University and Dale. It’s address is 583 University and its the building with the lovely light green paint job. It’s not really a Minnesota color, which makes it stand out in a very pleasant way from its neighbors.
They certainly had limes and soft tacos, in addition to ripe and affordable avocados, a good variety of peppers, and a good butcher shop which I will be going back to soon. Grocery stores have only gotten bigger and bigger, and we have lost many of the smaller scale, neighborhood-serving grocers which are (for me) so much nicer to shop in. The sole exception to this have been supermercados and other culturally-specific stores that still seem to retain a human scale.
I also came across this nice MPR story about Mi Linda.
