Government agencies partner to create remedy for medication disposal

A new partnership between Minnesota Pollution Control Agency and county level law enforcement is both preventing pharmaceutical drug abuse and protecting our environment. When over-the-counter prescriptions or the most basic medications expire, new policy encourages citizens to dispose of them properly at collection boxes.

The Ramsey County Law Enforcement center has a nondescript receptacle that together with another location has disposed of 2,661 pounds of medications since it launched a year ago.

County sheriffs want these unused controlled substances out of household cabinets, and the MPCA wants it properly discarded so it stays out of our waterways.
