It can be tough trying to be all things to all people.
Imagine you are a young woman walking down a street in the US when a group of young men starts hooting and whistling at you. It’s probably annoying, even infuriating, but you keep walking and ignore them. Now imagine the same thing happening on a street in Kiev or Odessa. You should probably run for your life because you may have just become a target to be kidnapped and sold as a sex slave in a distant land. Continue Reading
Frogtown “is a complete news desert. There’s a complete absence of access to local information,” said E-Democracy founder Steven Clift. With no local papers and limited coverage by regional publications, Frogtown residents struggle to find a way to connect. Really, sometime I don’t know what I would do with out that essential engagement.A little over a week ago, I covered a walk-in organized by the Saint Paul Teacher’s Federation in Saint Paul schools. I didn’t receive a press release about it. A teacher reached out to my editor to make sure we knew about the walk-in and the reasons behind it. I spoke to the teacher at some length about a few different issues and in the end, she didn’t feel comfortable using her name in an article because she felt there might be retaliation. She told me it was actually her union steward who advised her not to use her name. It’s certainly frustrating for me, because it’s difficult to put a story together when you don’t have any quotable sources, and Lord knows I get in trouble when I try to pass off a story with anonymous sources.Still, I am happy to hear from individuals even if it’s just background information. There’s a persistent lie making its way through popular media- and often twisted through social media. Like any good lie it starts with a kernel of truth but gradually becomes a clear and open lie. Continue Reading
