Dems offer online form letter with drop-down apologies to Limbaugh

Democrats have invented an online tool that generates apology letters to Rush Limbaugh with a series of drop-down menus for filling in the blanks. The dittohead widget was inspired by and incorporates mea culpas from leading Republicans after they made comments critical of Limbaugh, the radio host seen as ascendant in the GOP. Apparently the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee is offering it in the spirit of bipartisan support that saw national Republican organizations back Al Franken and Democrats in asking the federal government to allow more committees with fewer rules to raise funds for the Minnesota U.S. Senate election contest trial. Schools with “kick”

To succeed, our community schools must not be bland models of industrial-era education. They must have educational “kick,” offering strong student and family services and differentiated learning in each and every one of them! I believe that a combination of strong community schools that attract back local families, combined with strategic, centrally-located magnets and perhaps one strong magnet at the far periphery of each attendance area, would be a good formula for long-term educational excellence, sustainability and cost reduction. What I cannot support, ever, is forced assimilation, i.e., forcing people to attend schools in their own neighborhoods without offering a small amount of sensible, competitive options that can allow our district to compete in a broader city, state and country arena of expanding educational choice. The sad truth of the matter is that our own schools are in competition with each other for resources. Continue Reading

Brian Lambert on the news media

Brian Lambert, media blogger for Mpls-St.Paul magazine and former media columnist for the St. Paul Pioneer Press talked about the future of media Wednesday at the TC Media Alliance Lunch With a Journalist forum. “All of it’s going to be electronic,” Lambert said. “The paper thing – forget about it.”He predicted a future with “maybe a half dozen major newspapers in the country. Even the Twin Cities would be down to something very parochial, because there’s no way to repeat Iraq coverage that we get out of the New York Times. Continue Reading

Freedom is a very big deal

Comment on RNC Aftermath It amazes me how much some people mention the huge sacrifices that have been made for the freedom we have in this country, yet they believe it is somehow “whining” to even notice its loss. If our rulers are truly allowed to lock up anyone who disagrees without even a crime being committed, then what was the value of all those sacrifices? Continue Reading

“Listen to our cry”

Comment on Liberians want to stay in MinnesotaMy name is Moses Woloquelli, I came to the U.S during the heat of the bloody civil war that occur in Liberia. My Mother and my father were cut into pieces along with my little brother by armed men. Moreover, the rest of my relatives were buried alive. Our residence was burned down into dust like many Liberians who are now residing in the U.S. I do not have any where to stay in Liberia. America is all I know as my home. Continue Reading

Bachmann’s statements on stimulus raise a few eyebrows

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann’s ranting has the blog world buzzing yet again this week. Late last week, in an appearance with KTLK’s Chris Baker, the Minnesota Republican said, “We’re running out of rich people in this country.” She said she thinks Obama will lower the “rich” threshold to couples making $65,000 a year. The Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen went through her comments line by line and found some false, albeit interesting, ideas held by Minnesota’s most conservative member of Congress:
• ACORN is “under federal indictment for voter fraud,” but the stimulus bill nevertheless gives ACORN “$5 billion.” (In reality, ACORN is not under federal indictment and isn’t mentioned in the stimulus bill at all.)• many members of Congress have “a real aversion to capitalism.”• the stimulus bill includes a measure to create a “rationing board” for health care, and after the bill becomes law, “your doctor will no longer be able to make your healthcare decisions with you.”• the recovery package is part of a Democratic conspiracy to “direct” funding away from Republican districts, so Democratic districts can “suck up” all federal funds. Bachmann doesn’t think this will work because, as she put it, “We’re running out of rich people in this country.”• the “Community-Organizer-in-Chief” is also orchestrating a conspiracy involving the Census Bureau, which the president will use to redraw congressional lines to keep Democrats in power for up to “40 years.” When the host said he was confused, noting that congressional district lines are drawn at the state level, Bachmann said Obama’s non-existent plan is an “anti-constitutional move.”var mnindyHeadline = “MORE FROM”; var mnindyHeadline2 = “Michigan Messenger”; Toward the end, Bachmann said, “We are literally losing our country,” to which Benen responded, “Congresswoman, you’ve literally lost something, but I don’t think it’s your country.” Continue Reading

Standing up for Liberians in U.S.

Nekessa Opoti’s article on Liberians facing the threat of deportation after decades of legal residence struck a chord with many readers. IT BRING TEARS TO MY EYESIt bring tears to my eyes to hear that we will have to return home. Me I came to America as a child all I know is America. My parents grew up in Liberia. I hear how it was sweet during the good days but me all I remember is the gunshots, dodging bullets, running and trying to live. Continue Reading

The Somali community and the Twin Cities mainstream media: Towards a more perfect union?

Frustrations and suggestions were exchanged at a panel discussion on the portrayal of the Somali community by the media. The accusations in the media that the Abubakar mosque was connected to the missing Somali men, seemed to be the cause of the community’s resentment towards and mistrust of the media. Somali youth on the FBI

After the disappearances of young Somali men over the past few months, some youth complained that the negative press has resulted in repeated FBI interrogations. Samiya Ahmed, Rukia Mohamed and Sarah Qaxiya were Facebook friends with some of the missing. The authorities went to Samiya’s house with photos of the missing men asking her if she knew any of them. “When they came to my house, it took me by shock. I have never had any encounters with the law,” said the Normandale student. Continue Reading
