Today I finally made it to Big Daddy’s. I love BBQ and have been lucky enough to eat at some great places in difference places. I grew up in Texas with a well-deserved reputation for good BBQ (especially beef), but also living in DC I got to have a lot of the North Carolina influenced pulled pork that comes with a mustard like sauce. Big Daddy’s can stand up proudly to any of the places I have been. It’s located on the northwest corner of University and Dale. The interior is bright and clean, in fact it’s one of the cleaner BBQ places I’ve been to, and you are immediately greeted by two very friendly people working behind the counter.
I went with the beef ribs and sides of collard greens and coleslaw. The ribs were nice and tender, and I would highly recommend getting the spicy BBQ sauce to go with it. It’s the perfect compliment to the smoke-flavored meat. They use the traditional, smokehouse barbeque style where the meat is cooked in a separate compartment from the wood fire. This gives the meat that smoky flavor. The greens were good to as they didn’t boil them into a tasteless mush as often happens. I don’t know why collards get such a bad rap. They are one of my favorite greens.
It’s a little hairy over there right now with the construction on the north side of University, but the signage for the parking is excellent. The best way to do it is drive east on Sherburne, and then turn south on St. Alban’s. You’ll start seeing lots of signs that will get you through the alley and right into the parking behind Big Daddy’s.
