I head up to the State Capitol in St. Paul every work day where I am employed by the Minnesota House of Representatives. No, I’m not a politician. I work in the nonpartisan House Public Information Services department where I am assistant director and editor. I cover committees and the floor sessions for Session Weekly newsmagazine and our online efforts. My “beat” is taxes and bonding, but what I enjoy most is educating people about the legislative process. While I love my job at the House, my passion has always been community journalism. My newspaper experience spans over 25 years and includes editing and reporting for the Prior Lake American, the Montevideo American News and Press Publications in White Bear Lake. I left the newspaper world about seven years ago to work for the Minnesota House of Representative where my position marries quite nicely my interest in public policy and journalism. But community journalism keeps beckoning me. (I do teach one class a semester in the University of Minnesota journalism department). Now I blog at B-Ville News. People ask me why I blog - it's because telling Burnsville’s stories enriches my life.
Arguably one of the longest serving mayors in the Twin Cities metropolitan area is Burnsville’s Elizabeth Kautz. As the New Year began, she sat down for an interview about the challenges the city faces and how it has changed over her tenure. But of course, the first question is: Will she seek a sixth four-year term in 2012? The answer is: “Yes.” Why? Continue Reading

As Minnesota’s National Guard members return from their deployment to Kuwait, the state can expect the problems faced by returning veterans to increase to a “tsunami” level.” Uppermost on that list is the potential for suicide.Minnesota has the highest number of suicides among its Guard members than any other state, Maj. Gen. Rick Nash, adjutant general for the Minnesota National Guard, told a joint meeting of the House Veterans Services Division and the Senate State Government Innovation and Veterans Committee. No action was taken.Since 2007, 24 Minnesota National Guard members have taken their own life — followed by Oregon at 16. Nash noted the incidents occurred among members who had never been deployed, debunking the common assumption that suicide is related to post-traumatic stress syndrome.“The essential fact is suicide rates have been increasing, not only those in the military. … Suicide rates in Minnesota are five times higher than homicides,” Nash said. Many factors contribute to a person taking their own life, including unemployment, family breakups and financial stresses, he said.Minnesota’s high unemployment rate among veterans (approximately 12 percent) has Nash concerned.
