COMMUNITY VOICES | Sheridan Memorial Park dedicated on blustery Veteran’s Day

The Sheridan Veteran’s Memorial, located in Sheridan Memorial Park on the bank of the Mississippi River just north of the Broadway bridge, was dedicated on Veteran’s Day. Dozens of people shivered at the ceremony to honor the memorial and the sacrifice of veterans.The memorial was the brainchild of a group of World War II veterans from Northeast Minneapolis. They wanted to establish a veterans memorial along the Mississippi River. They ran into roadblock after roadblock until they met up with the Sheridan Neighborhood Organization, a newly formed neighborhood group representing the only neighborhood in Minneapolis that didn’t have a park.Howard Weller, the last surviving member of that group of veterans, spoke at the dedication ceremony. COMMUNITY VOICES | Sculpture near downtown Minneapolis is a beacon to homeless youth

“Filling the Void,” is a new sculpture that was recently unveiled near downtown Minneapolis. It sits near the front door of YouthLink, a refuge for homeless youth. Sculptor Randy Walker worked with the youth and staff at Kulture Klub Collaborative, a youth arts program that operates out of the YouthLink building, to create the sculpture. Walker received a McKnight Public Art Project grant from Forecast Public Art to build and create the first installation of the sculpture.This documentary, created by John Akre and Ryan Shelstad in partnership with IFP MN, follows the progress of this project from the winter to the unveiling of the sculpture this summer. COMMUNITY VOICES | Community and schools work together in Northeast on Welcome Back BBQ

The 7th Annual Northeast Community and Schools BBQ was held outside Edison High School on Thursday, August 22. The event is a collaboration between several Northeast Minneapolis neighborhood groups, businesses, and the Minneapolis Public Schools in Northeast to give community members and parents an opportunity to get together on one of the last days before the school year starts.This video looks at the event and features the voices of many of the volunteers, school principals, school board members and officials, and business representatives who organized and volunteered for the event. COMMUNITY VOICES | Open Street event animated Minnehaha Avenue

On Sunday, August 10, Minnehaha Avenue in South Minneapolis was closed to car traffic from 10 am to 4 pm for the first ever Open Streets event in Longfellow. Thousands of people walked and biked up and down Minnehaha to visit the many businesses and artists who were conducting activities in the street.Among the activities was a street animation station and a pop-up Cycletrack. Dinkytown Greenway opens with multi-stop ride

After two decades of planning and hoping, the Dinkytown Greenway opened on Sunday, August 4th, with a ride that took bicyclists from the St. Paul Campus of the University to the west side of the Mississippi River. COMMUNITY VOICES | Loring Park hosts Aquatennial Pre-Parade Party

A diverse crowd of families from the neighborhood and families on their way to the Aquatennial Torchlight Parade gathered in Loring Park on July 17 for a party that included games for the kids, pony rides, dancing, and food provided by MAD DADS. Even the Aquatennial royalty showed up to dance with the kids.The event is put on every year by Citizens for a Loring Park Community, the Friends of Loring Park, and the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board. The Third Annual Loring Park Acoustic Music Festival brought neighbors and music lovers together on Saturday, June 8, to enjoy a diverse mix of acoustic music in the natural amphitheater of Loring Park. The event, organized by Citizens For a Loring Park Community, featured eight acts from the Twin Cities and the wider region, playing music ranging from Cajun to Jug Band.

Greenway Glow lights up the Midtown Greenway

Despite power outages in surrounding blocks, the second annual Greenway Glow went on in the Midtown Greenway Saturday night. Batteries, projections and sparklers lit up the night up and down the Greenway during the event, which lasted until midnight and was a combination fundraising bike ride and art event.
