The impending invasion of Syria

By Eric Ferguson (Minnesota Progressive Project) | August 23, 2011

I keep having to rework this as events move quickly. I make no promise something big hasn’t happened since I posted, even if not much time has passed. Particularly, Tripoli fell to Libyan rebels while I was working on it, and changes things.

Stories you missed during the debt ceiling debate

By Eric Ferguson (Minnesota Progressive Project) | August 5, 2011

The world held its breath while the first ever default of the federal government came closer, but the world didn’t stop. There were noteworthy if not important stories happening. I’m sure there’s more, after all, I must have missed some too, but here are some I didn’t miss:

All of Obama’s debt ceiling options are unconstitutional

By Eric Ferguson (Minnesota Progressive Project) | July 31, 2011

Headlines need to be brief, so let’s rephrase: if Congress doesn’t raise the debt ceiling, President Obama has three options, each of which comes with a reasonable case that it’s unconstitutional. Obama can:

Why privatizing Social Security doesn’t work

By Tony Sterle (Minnesota Progressive Project) | July 29, 2011

Since its inception in the 1930s, Social Security has provided millions of Americans with safety and insurance in the case of unemployment, injury, and old age. Compromising 20.8% of our government budget and spending more than $700 billion per year, it is our nation’s single largest transfer program. Continue Reading

Disaster averted is disaster disbelieved

By Eric Ferguson (Minnesota Progressive Project) | July 28, 2011

Remember the Y2K bug? Ha ha, how funny that we all took it seriously, thinking planes would fall out of the sky and utilities would fail and computers in businesses and governments would stop grinding. How ridiculous we were to believe that back then!!!

No fight this year for Duluth mayor

By Shelly Mategko (Minnesota Progressive Project) | July 24, 2011

Duluth has a well-deserved reputation for its contentious mayoral races. But this year is different. For the first time in its history, Duluth will have an uncontested mayoral election.

Debt default and denial

By Eric Ferguson (Minnesota Progressive Project) | July 21, 2011

In this article about the US House Republicans finally starting to get that defaulting on the debt is bad thing, there was this paragraph that explains a lot how we got to the brink of default, and thereby a lot about the modern Republican Party:

The Republican plan: Avoid default by defaulting

By Tony Sterle (Minnesota Progressive Project) | July 18, 2011

A little while back, I wrote a piece on the debt ceiling dilemma.  In it, I reported how I felt that the Republican position on the matter is akin to playing a dangerous game with the economy. Continue Reading

McConnell offer is a trap, not a blink

By Eric Ferguson (Minnesota Progressive Project) | July 13, 2011

UPDATE: As predicted, the GOP’s funders are pressuring them to get the ceiling lifted.

  • Ritual and revelation: Black Ensemble Players reimagine Shakespeare

“It was kind of a whimsical artistic impulse,” recalled Antonio Duke, as he reminisced on this past spring when Ashawnti Sakina Ford drove him home each night after their rehearsals for a production of “Imaginary Invalid,” a play by 17th-century French actor and playwright, Molière. Duke mentioned that he would love to play Puck, […]

Transforming the community and its residents is the main goal of Northside food system organizers, who are using food as a tool to aid in that transformation.

Ha Tien Market still finds home along the Green Line, despite problems

On a rainy, cool day Ha Tien is a warm and welcoming site.

Education

  • St. Paul’s school resource officer policies still leave district room for improvement

On May 25, 2016, St. Paul School Resource Officer Bill Kraus forcibly arrested then 19-year-old Darion Bell outside of St. Paul Central High School. Bell, a Black youth who had recently transferred out of Central to the High School for Recording Arts, was on Central’s campus to visit one of his former teachers. Kraus used […]

Community Voices

  • [COMMUNITY VOICES] Non-criminal ‘technical violations’ are increasing Minnesota’s prison population

When it comes to incarceration rates, Minnesota stands out as one of the few states who is experiencing an increase in their prison population despite prison overcrowding and crime at a 50-year low. While there are multiple factors for this, a significant part of this increase is due to the incarceration of formerly released individuals […]

Photographer Nancy Musinguzi’s recent photos captured the over 7,000 people […]

In Case You Missed It

IGGERS DIGEST | Katar River: flavors and aromas of Ethiopia

It's easy to miss the Katar River restaurant, hidden away in a little industrial strip behind the Lake & Hiawatha shopping center in south Minneapolis. And even if you saw the big sign outside, you probably wouldn't know that this is specifically an Ethiopian restaurant, and a very good one.

Lynnell Mickelsen: Why all the conspiracy theories and pearl-clutching in this year’s school board race?

This has been the hottest school board race I’ve seen in 25 years of living in Minneapolis, with lots of conspiracy theories and pearl-clutching. Many of my neighbors and friends see the furious posts on Facebook, with all the hysterical warnings about the imminent destruction of public education as we know it, and are honestly confused.
