From hip-hop block parties, to street fairs and art shows, this weekend is full of fun events to enjoy in the Twin Cities (and surrounding areas). St. Paul may have dominated last weekend’s events, but Minneapolis represents fully this weekend! Check below for this weekend’s round-up:
FRIDAY

1st Annual New Bohemia Wurst+BierHaus Beer Fest, Friday, September 20 to Sunday, September 22, in Minneapolis.
Brats, beer, live music, games…and all for a worthy cause! $3 of the admission fee directly benefits Jared Allen’s Home for Wounded Warriors. Go here for more information.

Delirious Delhi Booking Reading, Friday, September 20 in Minneapolis
From the event advertisement:
“Dave Prager takes the stage at Magers & Quinn to read from Delirious Delhi, discuss his experiences working and living in India’s incredible capital, and explain why Westerners tourists in India refuse to acknowledge each other no matter how comical their avoidance may be. 10th Annual Zinefest, Saturday, September 21, in Minneapolis
Are you into or curious about self-publishing and DIY culture? If so, this event is for you. From the advertisement:

Apple Festival takes place Saturday, September 21, in Falcon Heights (suburb of St. Paul)
All things apple are celebrated at this festival, from apple crafts and games to apple treats. There will also be horse drawn hayrides and an opportunity to learn more about apples in Minnesota. $8 for adults; $7 for seniors (62+); $5 for children (3-16). Fall Fine Arts Show, Saturday, September 21, in Minneapolis
This free event sponsored by the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA), will feature more than 140 of its members’ artwork. More information from the NEMAA website:
“Visit this eclectic exhibit at the 3rd floor gallery at Solar Arts Building to view the exceptional artwork on display during free, public gallery hours. Vote for your favorite piece of art for NEMAA’s “People’s Choice” Award, which will be awarded at the end of the show.”

Seward Neighborhood King’s Fair, Saturday, September 21, in Minneapolis
This biannual celebration of Seward Neighborhood features a host of fun activities including a fun run, live music, food vendors, display booths of local businesses, pony rides, petty zoo, moon bounce, parade, juggling and even free chair massages and foot scans! More information according to the King’s Fair website:
“King’s Fair was a precursor to the Minnesota State Fair, and was held in South Minneapolis from 1877 to 1882. Since 1979 the name has been used for a biennial gathering in the Seward neighborhood.”

Hip-Hop Harambee Block Party, Saturday, September 21, in Minneapolis
The second annual Hip-Hop Harambee will take place at 501 Cedar Avenue South Minneapolis, in the Nomad parking lot. From Big K.R.I.T. to hometown favorite, Toki Wright, this outdoor block party is the place to be if you like hip-hop. The event will take place rain or shine and will be open to all ages. Early-bird tickets will be available online for $15 [300 available], $20 in advance and $25 at the door.

“Harambee (huh-rawm-bay) – a Swahili word meaning “to come together” – represents the collective vibe of the event, merging various art forms and musical expressions to give a concentrated taste of Twin Cities’ urban culture. Also included at the event will be a vacant lot dedicated to live graffiti murals, food trucks, a break-dancing stage, interactive art tents and a variety of vendors. Preceding the festivities will be a pre-Harambee bike ride dance party, starting 11AM at Loring Park and then making four scheduled stops before reaching the parking lot around 1PM.”

Lowry Avenue Open Streets and Harvest Festival Saturday, September 21, in Minneapolis
Minneapolis will host an Open Streets event this weekend taking place from Vincent Ave. N. to Emerson Ave. N. as part of Harvest Fest, and sponsored by Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition. Also, for the first time, this year’s four events are co-sponsored by the City. Last year’s events were held on South Lyndale and on North Lowry Avenue and drew 10,000 and 4,000 attendees, respectively. More information from the Open Streets Mpls website:
“During an Open Streets event, a significant length of a busy street is closed to automobile traffic for four to six hours to allow families and neighbors to walk, bike, skate, have fun and shop in a safe, car-free environment. Open Streets events are designed to help promote environmentally friendly transportation choices, such as walking, bicycling and mass transit. They were also created to promote good public health by encouraging active, healthy lifestyles.”
The Central Neighborhood Fair, Saturday, September 21 in Minneapolis.
This fair will host fun activities such as zumba and salsa dancing, games, free food, the premiere of the Live and Learn video project and the official unveiling of the Central Identity Project mural. There will also be speeches by school officials, community members and the artistic team, followed by a blessing by Aztec Dance group Kalpulli KetzalCoatlicue. Go here for more information.

Uniquinox Street Festival, Saturday, September 21, in Minneapolis
Directed by Scotty Reynolds and Taous Khazem and featuring the Interact artists with and without disabilities, this festival is advertised as a “one-day-only art and performance extravaganza” in celebration of the fall equinox. The street festival will feature giant puppets and mask pageant, side show cameos, art cars, live music and more!

1:00 The preshow begins with music, art cars and other delights
1:30 The grand pageant begins featuring a puppet and mask extravaganza
2:30 A dance party in true Interact style: come dance with your favorite Interact artists

SUNDAY

Children’s Music Festival, Sunday, September 22, in St Paul
This free music festival will be held from 11am–2:30pm at Black Bear Crossings on the Lake (Pavilion near Como Park), in St. Paul. The festival benefits Children’s Lighthouse of Minnesota, raising funding and awareness for the building of a children’s hospice and respite care home; it would be the first dedicated home of its kind in Minnesota. While the festivities are free, donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Go here for more information.
Flavors of Macalester-Groveland, Sunday, September 22, in St. Paul
Taking place on Grand Avenue between Snelling and Cambridge, this event is advertised as a celebration of “all the things that make Macalester-Groveland a great place to live, work, learn and play.” The festival will feature local musicians, artists, food, community organizations and a host of children’s activities.
