Believe it or not, Labor Day weekend is here! The kids are back in school, and cooler weather is right around the corner. But summer is not going out without a fight, or at least one last warm and sticky embrace. Indeed, this year’s Labor Day weekend looks to be a scorcher, but the heat will not be around for long. So why not get out and dance to summer’s swan song?
Beyond visiting the lakes, BBQs, Minnehaha Falls, etc., there are a number of community get-togethers, fairs, and festivals taking place. Below are a few events to enjoy in the Twin Cities this Labor Day Weekend:
- First annual “Copa Comunidad Midwest,” Friday, August 30 to Monday, September 2. Advertised as a gathering of “futbol, fantastic food, community building, leftist/anti-imperialist discussions, art, dancing…” this event includes two days of futbol, a performance showcase/dance party on Saturday and much more. Open to all. Go here for more details.
- Urban League’s 24th annual “Family Day,” Saturday, August 31, in North Minneapolis. Centered on the ideas of family values, secure neighborhoods, and economic development, this annual festival is a real crowd-pleaser. The event features drill teams, live pony rides, dance and fitness exhibits, delicious food, and a performance from R&B star, RL. The festivities start with a parade at 10 a.m. and don’t stop until dusk. Check the Urban League website for more details.
- “Labor Day Weekend: Marriage, Birth & Death in the 1800s” at Historic Fort Snelling, Saturday, August 31 to Monday, September 2. Enjoy a bit of history with a special program at Fort Snelling that offers a look inside the life and times of early Americans. Running from Saturday to Labor Day, the program includes costumed staff and theatrical performances. Visit the Historic Fort Snelling site for more information.
- Other fun happenings: the Walker Art Center’s Artist-Designed Mini-Golf and the last weekend of the Minnesota State Fair. Outside of the Twin Cities there’s the Minnesota Renaissance Festival in Shakopee, and the opening of the Shafer Corn Maze in Shafer, MN.
