Aquila Tapio, Oglala Lakota, was determined to finish what she opted to start in the fall of 2008. She entered the new Naadamaadiwin, “Helping One Another” Tribal Special Education program at Augsburg College and will be the first student through the program to obtain her master’s degree.Although Tapio acknowledges her academic notoriety, what is most evident is her humble demeanor and longstanding focus on helping people. She began her studies after moving to the Twin Cities when she was 18. Her initial two-year degree quickly led to a four-year degree from the University of Minnesota, then a paralegal certificate from Hamline University and finally a teaching certificate and a forthcoming master’s degree from Augsburg College. Tapio is currently enrolled in her final course. Continue Reading
Recently retired Eden Prairie Schools Superintendent Melissa Krull was honored by scores of parents and professional colleagues on Saturday October 15th for her support of educational equity and integration. A small band of vocal parents — The Braxton Bullies — have opposed the EP School district’s re-alignment of grade school districts and other reforms. Some of them have been caustic, mean and anonymous in local newspapers; facebook presentations like “The Eden Prairie School Board Accountability” and bloggers like “The Activist Next Door.”But Dr. Krull remains highly admired by a large majority of residents including Eden Prairie’s large Somali Community.Free Speech ZoneThe Free Speech Zone offers a space for contributions from readers, without editing by the TC Daily Planet. Minneapolis children will not be the only ones going back to school this fall.
“We’re not just talking about it, we’re doing it,” said Kathy Saltzman, executive Director of Minnesota Reading Corps, describing the success of the Minnesota Reading and Math Corps. A former state senator, she recalls many policy conversations on how to shrink the achievement gap. In her current role, policy becomes practice. “We have 800 people on the ground working on this through national service,” she said. The Corps hopes to fill all those positions this fall as they recruit throughout the state. The Minnesota Reading Corps pairs literacy tutors with pre-K through third grade students who are in danger of failing. Through short daily sessions and teaching strategies backed up by data indicators, literacy tutors use the science of reading and research to give students extra support. Tutors and coaches tailor strategies to the needs of each student. In addition to site coaches, master coaches help establish a strong support and knowledge base for tutors, parents, and students. Math Corps, a newer and smaller program, uses the same model and works with students from fourth through eighth grades.Literacy tutors, full-time or part-time, are paid a modest stipend for an 11-month service commitment.
