ST. ANTHONY PARK DIRECTORY 2009
A group of your neighbors, with the help of the St. Anthony Park Community Council, are putting together a directory of St. Anthony Park residents, businesses and community resources. The directory will make it easier to stay in touch with neighbors, call someone in an emergency, send out holiday cards or just make sure you are calling that fellow down the street by the correct name. If you would like to be included, go to www.sapcc.org or call Amy at 651-649-5992.
GREEN REMODELING
Wednesday, October 8, 6:30pm
Are you thinking about remodeling? Wondering how to make your drafty but beloved SAP home more energy efficient. St. Anthony Park resident and architectural designer and teacher Lucas Alm will show off his “green” home. Lucas is involved in the University of MN Solar Decathlon solar house project and will show his own home and what he has learned from transforming his home while minimizing construction waste and using local material resources. Free, call 651-649-5992 to register or email green@sapcc.org.
OCTOBER COMMUTER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Melissa Williams! This enthusiastic bus commuter shares her story about why she does it, why she loves it, and all the nitty gritty of carrying a crock pot on the bus. Her favorite part? “I get to be alone with my thoughts. No one is asking me for feedback, reminding me of a deadline, or unloading their life dramas on me (can you tell I teach and advise college students for a living?). I call it “enforced relaxation,” and I LOVE it.” This series profiles folks who live or work in St. Anthony Park and commute in an alternative way. Check the website for her story.
ANAEROBIC DIGESTION RECOMMENDED FOR ROCK-TENN PAPER RECYCLING PLANT
The Port Authority and the Rock-Tenn Community Advisory Panel have been studying fuels and technologies to power the paper recycling operations. They are recommending production of renewable biogas through anaerobic digestion in Greater Minnesota to offset Rock-Tenn’s use of natural gas. Anaerobic digestion uses microorganisms to break down organic matter to create methane and carbon dioxide. After much speculation, refuse-derived fuel was not recommended.
During this search for an energy solution, there have been twenty-four RCAP meetings, dozens of district council meetings, ten community forums, and two public meetings held by the Port Authority. The St. Paul City Council will review recommendations on Nov. 19th. The St. Anthony Park Community Council will discuss the recommendations at the October 9th Full Council meeting. More information can be found at www.rtadvisory.org or the St. Anthony Park Library.
THIS FALL, DON’T LEAVE THE LEAVES
Please keep leaves out of lakes and rivers by keeping them out of the streets and away from storm drains.Although leaves seem “natural” and harmless, excess leaves pose a threat to the health of our surface water. When it rains, leaves are washed into storm drains and directly into the nearest lake, or the Mississippi River. Once they get into the water and begin to decay, leaves release nutrients that contribute to algae growth. Excess algae makes recreation unpleasant, plus decomposing algae uses up oxygen in the water which, in turn, suffocates fish.
Here are some watershed-friendly alternatives to raking leaves into the street:
– Compose leaves for a nutrient-rich fertilizer for your gardens
– Use a mower to chop leaves into small particles and apply directly to your lawn to enrich it (top-dressing)
– Use chopped leaves as winter mulch for your glower gardens
– Drop off bagged leaves at a Ramsey County Yard Waste Collection Site

HELP WITH FALL CHORES FOR SENIOR CITIZENS IN SAP
The St. Paul Senior Chore Program works to keep senior citizens in their homes by providing links to people who can help with household chores. If you, or someone you know, age 60+ in St. Anthony Park needs help with the fall work of winterizing windows, weather stripping doors, leaf raking, bagging, or taking leaves to the compost site, please call Carole at the Senior Chore Service at 651-649-5992.
SINGLE HAULER WORKSHOP MATERIALS
We know the work of the Community Council has an impact, but rarely do we get to see such a concrete and fast example as with the single hauler workshop. The Park Bugle profiled Mary’s success at organizing her entire block to have the same hauler within a week of the workshop – read the article at Materials from the workshop are available on our website at www.sapcc.org.
MNDOT SOUND MONITORING
MnDOT will be conducting noise level readings in North St. Anthony Park in the blocks west of Como Ave this week or next. So if you see some folks hanging out with equipment, that’s why. Offer them a cup of coffee or tea!
THANK YOU TO CLEANUP VOLUNTEERS
SAPCC extends a huge thank you to all of our neighborhood cleanup volunteers. We saved tons of materials from the traditional waste stream and taught neighbors about reducing their global impact. Volunteers also collected reusable furniture and household goods for local non-profits. We hope you can join us again next year. And bring your neighbors!!!
