Volunteer plumbers from Minneapolis/St. Cloud Plumbers Local 15 and St. Paul/Mankato Plumbers Local 34 helped 81 needy homeowners as part of the 20th annual “Water’s Off” day of community service Saturday, April 5.
Supported by the Minnesota Mechanical Contractors Association and the Metro Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association, 96 union volunteers donated nearly 500 hours to repair plumbing problems for low-income, elderly, and disabled homeowners.
The work performed had an estimated value exceeding $41,000. Area contractors through their associations provided parts, tools and trucks to make the event completely free for qualifying homeowners.
Governor Mark Dayton assisted in recognizing the efforts of the local community action programs who played a crucial role to ensure the recipients of this volunteer effort were truly in need.
“Water’s Off” was started in the Twin Cities in 1994 and is now a national volunteer program. Minnesota holds the largest “Water’s Off” event in the nation.
