Mother Was Right

Just came from seeing The Gatekeepers directed by Dror Moreh. Why are there no women in the film? My mother was right: testosterone fights testosterone in the Israeli and Palestinian cultures and in the world in general. I won’t list the three or four women who were on screen briefly because even if I did the film would belly flop on the Bechdel test for fiction.

And then read The New York Times “Girls Excel in the Classroom but Lag in Entry to 8 Elite Schools in the City” by Al Baker from March 2013. “I don’t think you’re looking at discrimination here,” said Chester E. Finn Jr., president of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute, an education policy group, who, with Jessica A. Hockett, wrote the recent book, “Exam Schools: Inside America’s Most Selective Public High Schools.” “I think you’re looking at habit, culture, perceptions, tradition and curricular emphasis.”
