Taking old things and giving them a second life is one of the key philosophies behind Junket, the “tossed and found” shop on Minnehaha Avenue that opened last November. Owner Julie Kearns’ keen eye for previously discarded treasures and her ability to tap into the zeitgeist of the community has grown her business from a shop that hosted a once-monthly sale to now hosting twice-monthly sales; monthly maker bees – classes where participants have made campfire starters, hand-bound journals, and cigar box ukeleles; and recycle drives that benefit local organizations.
This weekend, the shop is launching an online presence called Shop Junket. Kearns explained, “We want to develop our business responsibly without encouraging the increased use of fossil fuels (while we know we’d find a lot of interested customers in the suburbs, we target our shop’s marketing specifically within Minneapolis and Saint Paul proper in keeping with this ecological component of our business framework). One great way to do this is to make our product available via existing transportation channels (i.e. USPS, UPS, etc…).”
Unlike most secondhand stores where the inventory is here today and gone tomorrow, Kearns stocks Junket shelves with the basics for her customers – such as buttons, notions, needles, prints, and papers. “If everyone could have a used purchasing experience similar to the Target experience – i.e. go to pick up that needed thing and know that they could expect to find it in-store – we believe that many would choose to do this,” commented Kearns. “Ultimately, we envision being this sort of go-to resource for the creatives among us – somewhere people can be confident of finding what they need for the project they’re working on.”
To celebrate the launch of its online shop, Junket is hosting a sale this weekend starting on Friday – all items will be 50% off. A preview sale will be held on Thursday and items will be 25% off. The shop will be open Thurs 5-9 p.m., Fri-Sun 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Junket will also be hosting a family-friendly celebration on Saturday, 8/17 from 5-7 p.m.
Junket is located at 4047 Minnehaha Ave, Minneapolis.
