On May 1st, 2011, the MayDay Parade starts at 1 pm, the Ceremony shortly after 3:30 pm, and the Festival goes on all day at Powderhorn Park. Details are available at the website of In the Heart of the Beast Puppet and Mask Theatre.
The last two official public open workshops this Tuesday and Thursday from 7 pm to 9 pm offer an introduction to this year’s Caws to Unite Parade and Ceremony theme. A storyboard display is strung in the theatre’s foyer. An artist on staff will describe the story line and you can check-out a section that appeals to you.
In the Pay Up! section the Hoarders and their Dogs are finishing up.
Join a team of people to carry the scarecrows along the parade route.
Or just come and help paint surfaces, such as rabbits.
Offer to assist and you will be directed to a task that needs to be accomplished, just wear clothes that will look good after a few paint smears. Puppet paste is mostly colorless, but leaves a stiffness that lasts many washings. Do not worry, the elegant people next to you are as accomplished at fitting in as you will be. Your smile will be contagious.
You can help without promising to be in custom. All the sections are happy to add people to their sections, sometimes just barring a pole with a sign, or a gigantic scarecrow which you will coordinate with two other novice puppeteers. There will be no danger unless you get over-excited. But spring time dance is a part of MayDay.
Music should predominate the day, even a float with steel drums will move the crowd as it moves down the street.
You can help without being in the parade. You could help distribute the tabloid MayDay program, which details the storyboard interrupted in the parade with parade-style imagination and joy. Work together two days before the show by being on the crew of volunteers to collect materials on Friday. Or be valuable in a load-in crew transporting theatre material to the festival site just the day before MayDay. Help this Saturday and you could land you a position in a band if you play an instrument. How well you play will match how much you share the MayDay spirit, any charitable talent adds to MayDay. To arrange to volunteer for any of these or other positions, please contact: Margery Otto, Volunteer Coordinator firstname.lastname@example.org or call 612-721-2535 x14. Postions are listed at Call for Volunteers.
On MayDay you can help advise how to recyclable materials, with well conceived methods of sorting. Or help in a block cleaning, assist in staffing merchandising or administration tasks, tend the Sun Folotilla before the Ceremony, or cleaning up, all of us can contribute to a beautiful positive event. We can take care of each other and prosper in many ways. MayDay is a start.
Attend MayDay, give MayDay greetings, be with people in the park and celebrate.
Have you got a cable spool, and able to walk on it? There is a MayDay position for your talent;
Can you cultivate a few garden plants? There are sprouts to be given to good homes, something like 13,600 sprouts of various garden varieties. You could help staff the distribution at the Festival.
Come to MayDay at Powderhorn Park in Minneapolis and start Spring.
