Delighted smiles, wide-open eyes, and frosted ‘ahs’ and ‘ohs.’ mostly directed upward, spread the warmth of wonder over a frozen veneer. A play ‘ground’ with tykes of all ages tangled in flights of fancy, restorative wind buffeting our temporary presence off the summer’s beach. Another perspective on our neighbor’s family romp in a park. This year’s Lake Harriet Kite festival is set for this Saturday, January 12, from noon to 4 p.m. at Lake Harriet, 43rd Street West and East Lake Harriet Parkway, near the bandshell.
Inexpensive kites will be available for purchase or bring your own. The Kite Festival also offers ice skating, ice fishing, snowshoeing, horse and wagon rides, kid’s medallion hunt and a marshmallow roast.
Thanks to Alan Wilfahrt for these photos and to TC Daily Planet volunteer photo editor Bonnie Wilson for mounting the photos on-line.
These images are from the 2006 Lake Harriet Winter Kite Festival held on January 21, 2006. The Festival for 2007 was canceled on both, the scheduled, and back-up date, because of the weather conditions. The Winter Kite Festival for 2008 is scheduled for January 12, with a back-up date the following Saturday, Jan. 19.
Members of the Minnesota Kite Society will demonstrate their skills maneuvering spectacular kites and will be available to help newer kite fliers.
The festival is hosted by the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board and co-sponsored by the Minnesota Kite Society, Department of Natural Resources Fisheries and Fishing in the Neighborhood Program, East Harriet Farmstead Neighborhood Association, Linden Hills Neighborhood Council and Southwest Activities Council.
