Food and Restaurants

King’s Korean – Pride of Fridley by Jeremy Iggers, The Rake • Last weekend was my birthday, and Carol offered to take me out to dinner any place I wanted to go. So I thought about a bunch of my favorite restaurants, like the Grand Café, and Saffron, and Namaste Café and Ngon and Peninsula Malaysian Cuisine, and decided that I wasn’t in the mood for any of them – I wanted to go someplace I hadn’t been recently. I thought about North Coast in Wayzata, which has just brought back its $35 four-course prix fixe menu, but I didn’t feel like driving that far, or having anything that elaborate. And Atlas Grill was out – they’re closed on weekends.

A night with Alicia Wiley at the 331: No joints in the joint, but double-Jack-rocks for just $4.50 by Dwight Hobbes, TC Daily Planet • If you’re looking for an enjoyable watering hole, try the 331 Club in Northeast Minneapolis. It’s got, right off the bat, two very good things going for it. There’s never a cover, and drinks—in addition to not being watered-down—don’t cost an arm and a leg.

Building community at Common Roots Café by Julia Quanrud, Minnesota 2020
Only a year after opening its doors, Common Roots Cafe’ in the Lyn-Lake neighborhood already has the local food critics singing its praises. Both the Pioneer Press and City Pages praised the cafe’s hand-made bagels, which critic Rick Nelson called, “a bagel Minnesota can be proud of!” Rachel Hutton from City Pages described the cafe’s offerings as, “lively – inspiring, even”, while Jay Boller from the Minnesota Daily noted plainly that the food “tastes darn good”.
