This election, of course every election, is a BIG DEAL. In the case of the Minneapolis Public Schools Board of Education, both your votes and mine are about the trajectory of the district for all our children in grades Pre-K – 12. Our votes must be about advancing the district as a whole. School board members’ priorities need to focus on moving effectively and urgently in the direction of improved student achievement for all students in all Minneapolis Public Schools (MPS).
Without question, the roles of the Public, School Board, Superintendent, District Leadership Team, Principals, Teachers, Staff, Families, Students, and Community Partners matter. “Better” is just not good enough, excellence is required. School board members must be willing to work with anyone, and must strive to work with everyone. This means all voices need to be at the “table” to weigh in on the governance required to educate all children. School board members must demonstrate the fortitude to stay focused on this approach and support leadership that does the same.
Keep in mind that the board vote is critical and also only the beginning.
Equally important is the ongoing board oversight required to ensure that practices, policies, and procedures are designed, implemented, evaluated, and improved not just for your child and mine, but also for every student at every Minneapolis Public School. This requires critical thinking, problem-solving, and the courage to have comprehensive and complex conversations that seek to 1) connect every area of Minneapolis with educational excellence and an equity framework, 2) confront the impact of race, class, gender, ability, language, and sexuality, 3) remove barriers that disadvantage certain students, schools, families, principals, teachers, staff, and communities, and 4) stay true to the commitment to governance that not only meets, but exceeds the vision at MPS – Every Child College and Career Ready. The desired outcomes and experiences of your school board members need to align with both the role of the school board and the vision at Minneapolis Public Schools.
This (governance committed to every student at every Minneapolis Public School) is the work of the MPS Board of Education and your School Board has important and urgent work to do!
I urge you to join me and vote with this in mind!
