We know, we know: it’s a total bummer that you can’t bring your dog to the State Fair — but with all those people, she’d be lucky to get out uncrushed! But there are still plenty of ways to get a furry fix at the fair. Here are our top pics for dog-centric fun this year:
EXTREME CANINES STUNT DOG SHOW is The North Woods’ newest attraction. Rescue dogs conquer big-air stunts, catch Frisbees mid-air, race through weave poles, compete in a one-of-a-kind triathlon, and showcase their incredible high-jumping skills. Free with fair admission (11:00, 2:00 & 4:30 daily, Located in The North Woods).
THE PET CENTER/PET CENTER OUTDOOR DEMO AREA has cool dog stuff happening every single day, so check the schedule to find something amazing. Here are some of our upcoming favorites:
- St. Paul Police K-9 Foundation Demonstration:A St. Paul police canine trainer demonstrates various canine obedience activities and suspect apprehension. Daily at 7:00pm.
- Twin Cities Obedience Training Club: Voted by WCCO fair guests as their favorite demonstration of the day in 2013! Club members and their dogs will perform obedience, agility, tracking and disc dog activities as a trainer narrates for spectators. Tuesday, August 26 only. Hourly from 9:00am – 5:00pm.
- Northstar Rottweiler Club Demonstrations: The club demonstrates all levels of obedience, as well as carting and rally course skills, and shares information about the breed and its involvement in therapy, herding, caring, agility and more. (And we know how much you love rotties!) Thursday, August 28 only! 9:00, 11:00, 1:00, 3:00, & 5:00.
- Doberman Drill Team. The Rio Gran Doberman Drill Team has two teams this year. Each team has 16 Dobermans and handlers. Working as a team, handler and Doberman synchronize in motion to music. To the uninitiated, it looks like magic. Monday, September 1 only! 10:00, 12:00, 2:00, & 4:00.
SO MANY DOGGIE TREATS! Win back your dog’s affection (obviously, she’ll be put-out that you had to attend the fair sans canine) by bringing her home some tasty treats and dog merch! There are a ton of awesome doggie vendors this year, including Barkley’s Bistro,Annie’s Pooch Pops, The Dog Perk (treats on a stick!), and Great Dog Co.
And be sure not to miss the awesome human food at the Blue Barn! Our fab partners at Blue Plate just opened it this year, and renowned local foodie Jason DeRusha has the most delicious things to say about it — in particular, we’re already drooling over the brownie/bacon concoction they’re serving. (Just tell yourself you’ve earned it with all that dog shopping you’ve been doing!)
