With the summer program season right around the corner and registration for our summer programs starting April 13th, I would like to highlight some programs and events that you might want to mark on your calendar.
Fishing Camp: Aug 19-22, 9am-1pm, Ages 8-12, $25
Learn the basics of casting, knots, and catch and release while exploring shore spots on the Mississippi River this summer. Instructor Dan the Fishing Man has years of experience sharing his passion for fishing with kids in the parks. He will teach your child secrets of catching fish on the river and how to land the lunker.
Photography Camp: July 15-18, 9:30am-1pm, Ages 8-12, $25
Come explore the Corcoran neighborhood. We will be going on adventures through the neighborhood and the kids will take pictures of the amazing and unique things we see. Each day we will explore the area then come back to the park and have snack time, and–weather permitting–we’ll go for a swim. Once we have all of our pictures, we will print them off, and the kids will make a collage to be displayed in the park building. Please bring a towel, sun block, water bottle, digital camera (if possible), and good walking shoes.
Miniature Horse Camp: June 24-28, 10am-1pm, Ages 7-12, $50
The Half Pint Horse Foundation is bringing their miniature horses to Corcoran Park for a week of fun and learning for children ages 7-12. These tiny horses are not for riding, but love interacting with kids. We are excited to provide a safe way to learn about horses, horse safety, horse care, grooming, and training, using horse related activities and craft projects, without leaving the city.
Rock Band Camp – Beginning: Aug 13-15, 9am-12:30pm, Ages 8-16, $60
Learn the basics of: guitar, bass, drums, or vocals during the camp. We’ll put it all together during the week and learn how to jam. Finish the week with a recording session of everyone’s work at the Powderhorn Recording Studio.
Solstice Festival “Xopantla”: June 15th, 11am
Corcoran Park and Ketzalcoatlicue invite you to gather at the park and celebrate the Summer Solstice. Activities commence at 11:00am and end at 3:00pm. There will be over 80 dancers in full regalia and a craft table for children to learn about Aztec art and design. Bring your family.
Corcoran Ice Cream Social: July 10th, 6:30pm
The Ice Cream Social is a great time to come together as a neighborhood and spend a nice evening together. Ice Cream will be provided by the park and inexpensive grilled burgers, hotdogs, and chips will be available for purchase. We will have sidewalk art for the whole family. Students from the Corcoran Music Program will perform during the event. So plan on spending a fun filled evening at Corcoran Park.
Outdoor Movie in the Park: July 10th, 9pm
Join us for an outdoor screening of “Men in Black 3” on the big screen. The movie will start around dusk and ends around 11pm. In the event of rain, the movie will be cancelled. This will start just after our Ice Cream Social.
These are just a few of the 40 plus programs and events that Corcoran is offering this summer. Corcoran has many pre-school programs and camps, music lessons for kids, as well as our summer children’s meal program. You can find a full listing at www.minneapolisparks.org.
