Conference committees have sometimes unpopular task of compromise

Print

House and Senate conference committees began meeting this week to consider appropriations and language in various omnibus finance bills.

The process includes negotiating a compromise and then sending the revised bill back to each legislative body, which then considers whether to adopt the conference committee report and re-pass the bill. To be presented to the governor for action, bills must be passed prior to the statutory May 20 end of the legislative session.

Wednesday morning, the first meeting was held to confer the health and human omnibus bill. That was followed in the afternoon with a meeting of the judiciary and public safety omnibus bill conferees. After the House and Senate named their conferees for the taxes omnibus bill, they were scheduled to meet Wednesday night.
