Saturday is School Choice Day in both Minneapolis and St. Paul. If you’re the parent of a student, you have the opportunity to send your child to either the public school in your neighborhood or a magnet school. You also have the opportunity to send your child to a charter or a private school. Both school districts, and metro-area charter schools, are planning one-stop information fairs where, they say, you can find out all you need to know about schools where you might want to send your child.
St Paul Public Schools’ Parent Information Fair runs from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium at 175 W. Kellogg Boulevard in St Paul.
Minneapolis Public Schools PreK-8 Information Fair runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, 1300 Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis.
Minneapolis Charter Schools’ fair will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Millennium Hotel, 1313 Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis.
Teachers and staff from many schools and departments of the district will be on hand to answer questions about schools, explain how the districts and charter schools might bus your child, and explain the application process. (St Paul schools require all students to apply, even to their neighborhood school, as a way to streamline the school choice process)
Both districts maintain school choice information web pages, which they recommend you check out before coming to the choice fairs. Minneapolis’ web site can be found here. St Paul School’s School Selection Guide is located here.
