NEIGHBORHOOD NOTES | Break Ground at Milly’s Peace Garden

Print

Community gardeners get to work this Saturday preparing the ground for the first season of Milly’s Peace Garden.  Organizers decided to arrange the lot at 38th Street E and 21st Avenue S into 8 pods, each approximately 70 – 85 square feet, and to have several gardeners work a pod together.  The cooperating gardeners may share the $30 per pod cost, and more experienced gardeners may share their knowledge with novices.

The idea for a community garden took root last year when Corcoran residents attempted to lease a large vacant lot on 35th Street.  While that lease did not materialize, the effort galvanized the group.  They found a willing lessor at PRG on 38th Street.

Organizer Anne Holzinger says there is still space available for people to garden, and she welcomes anyone to stop by and help on Saturday, regardless of whether they plan to garden throughout the summer.  Compost donations are sought to help improve the soil.
