Even with the absence of Voltage: Fashion Amplified from this year’s Minneapolis-St. Paul Fashion Week lineup, there’s still plenty to look forward to. Also, MNfashion organizers have more time to focus on their three categories (The Shows, satellite runway shows, retail events). SUNDAY PICK | Nuruddin Farah’s “A Stone Thrown at the Guilty” staged reading at the Rarig Center

Somali novelist Nuruddin Farah’s new play A Stone Thrown at the Guilty found its inspiration in two uprisings that happened under British rule—one in 1920 and the other in 1939-40. The storyline, however, “veers sharply from the usual narratives of heroic resistance.” The free public-staged reading will be held at the Stoll Thrust Theatre at the Rarig Center for the performing arts.

TUESDAY PICK | This Valentine’s Day, try Erotica Slam

Poetry SlamMN’s Erotica Slam is in its 17th year of unholy matrimony, and this year comes with a bonus night on Valentine’s Day at Kieran’s. The featured poet of the evening is Cristin O’Keefe Aptowicz, but audience members are encouraged to bring their own three-minute poem to compete as well. The night is promised to be filled with “poetry that will make you squirm, squish, and simmer” in case you weren’t already hot and bothered enough already.

MONDAY PICK | What is Black Art Jeopardy! registration deadline?

Answer: The mandatory to-do before competing in historical trivia pertaining to artists and cultural icons recognized in the second month of the year. Black History Month meets the sport of trivia in Black Art Jeopardy! at the Hosmer Public Library. The categories are a potpourri of Black Poets, African American Novels, Black Playwrights, Black Muralists, Black Women Visual Artists, and Black Photographers. The registration deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 15 and the event is Thursday, Feb. 23. Now that you have the topics, it’s time to hit the Google searches.

SATURDAY PICK | Introducing Kayla Plosz’s “visually seductive” abstractions at Soo Visual Arts Center

Minneapolis College of Art and Design is a breeding ground for original art in this city. Ergo Kayla Polsz, one of MCAD’s MFA students that Soo Visual Arts Center chose to exhibit a solo, comprehensive body of work. Plosz’s oil abstractions, described as “visually seductive,” will be on exhibit through March 25. The opening reception is tonight at SooVAC from 6 to 9.

MONDAY PICK | The Roe Family Singers “raise a ruckus” at the 331 Club every Monday night

It might not be entirely fair or accurate to describe The Roe Family Singers as “if The Waltons and The Partridge Family had a baby.” But they are rural and an all-around wholesome family band. And since 2005, they’ve been playing at the 331 Club every Monday night. In their own words: “With a mix of original music and contemporary takes on old-time, traditional, and gospel tunes, every performance raises a ruckus.”

FRIDAY PICK | The Current celebrates its 7th birthday at First Avenue

Seventh birthday parties usually consist of store-bought cake, cheap party favors, Disney princess themes, and seven year olds. The Current’s seventh birthday party will (probably) not include anything of the like, it being at First Avenue in front of an 18-plus crowd and all. Tonight’s lineup includes Tapes ‘n Tapes, Dead Man Winter, Low, and Night Moves; with Haley Bonar, Sims, Suicide Commandos, and Polica playing a second show on Saturday.
