Mary Treacy

Mary Treacy

Please check out my blog at:http://marytreacy.wordpress.com  One time librarian and former executive director of the Minnesota Coalition on Government Information I am currently a very happy independent consultant exploring untold options.  My passion is to contribute the bit I am able to an informed and engaged community in which everyone's story can be told - and heard.  This means using a dynamic array of media - newspapers, websites, television, radio, social media and whatever comes on line tomorrow.  It means being willing to plumb the depths of a story - and it means having the courtesy, if not the intellectual curiosity, to learn from others. My sons are both enmeshed in the information maze.  Rick Birmingham is the Manager of IT Services  at MAP for Nonprofits.  Steve Birmingham works his magic on the public access terminals in Hennepin County Library.  Grandson Will Birmingham, 19 months, loves food, slides, puddles and books - in that order. A graduate of what was then the College of St. Catherine I went on to get a MS in Library Science.  Truth to tell, I didn't work in real libraries that much, but I did work 18 years as Director of Metronet, a collaboration of nearly 600 public, academic, corporate, medical, school and other libraries and information services in the TC's.  In recent years I've worked in a number of consulting positions, most notably the Sisters of St. Joseph Ministries Foundation.  As a hapless volunteer I've worked with a host of nonprofits including the Minnesota Coalition on Government Information, Learning in Style, the DFL Education Foundation, the Village Farmers Market among others. I've also written several pieces for TCDP.  In recent weeks I've been joined the throngs of scribe wannabes by launching my own little blog called Poking Around With Mary - because poking around is what I do a good deal of the time.

Erosion of voters’ rights – a slow rising tsunami

By Mary Treacy (Poking Around) | June 5, 2012

The elective franchise, if guarded as the ark of our safety, will peaceably dissipate all combinations to subvert a Constitution, dictated by the wisdom, and resting on the will of the people. (Thomas Jefferson)

  • Ritual and revelation: Black Ensemble Players reimagine Shakespeare

“It was kind of a whimsical artistic impulse,” recalled Antonio Duke, as he reminisced on this past spring when Ashawnti Sakina Ford drove him home each night after their rehearsals for a production of “Imaginary Invalid,” a play by 17th-century French actor and playwright, Molière. Duke mentioned that he would love to play Puck, […]

Education

  • St. Paul’s school resource officer policies still leave district room for improvement

On May 25, 2016, St. Paul School Resource Officer Bill Kraus forcibly arrested then 19-year-old Darion Bell outside of St. Paul Central High School. When it comes to incarceration rates, Minnesota stands out as one of the few states who is experiencing an increase in their prison population despite prison overcrowding and crime at a 50-year low. In Case You Missed It

IGGERS DIGEST | Katar River: flavors and aromas of Ethiopia

It's easy to miss the Katar River restaurant, hidden away in a little industrial strip behind the Lake & Hiawatha shopping center in south Minneapolis. And even if you saw the big sign outside, you probably wouldn't know that this is specifically an Ethiopian restaurant, and a very good one.

Lynnell Mickelsen: Why all the conspiracy theories and pearl-clutching in this year’s school board race?

This has been the hottest school board race I’ve seen in 25 years of living in Minneapolis, with lots of conspiracy theories and pearl-clutching. Many of my neighbors and friends see the furious posts on Facebook, with all the hysterical warnings about the imminent destruction of public education as we know it, and are honestly confused.
