‘Interim’ Minneapolis Civil Rights director seeks permanent reforms

Lauretta Dawolo

Michael “Kip” Browne continues to lead the Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights (CCR) as its interim director beyond the original three-month term of his appointment this spring. As to why his term has been extended, no clear answer has been provided.

The fact that there are also three other City departments currently in interim status may be cause for maintaining stability at CCR, but getting to know Browne may offer an even better explanation for his retention. He may be young, but Browne’s passion for human rights and his legal expertise have shaped the reputation of a man with a vision to bring the department up to its full potential.

Northside Initiative meets community resistance

Lauretta Dawolo

University of Minnesota officials have big plans for the corner of Penn and Plymouth in North Minneapolis, where they envision a national model of university involvement in a community with multiple needs. Some community members, however, view the proposed facility as an unwelcome intrusion that could do more harm than good.

“The University has been ridiculed for not coming to the community first,” said Robert Jones, senior vice president of system academic administration at the University of Minnesota. “The fact is that we really had no plan, just ideas. We wanted to take the time to develop key partners who would have a vested interest and concern about that dialogue. We planned to have the conversations with the small groups first, then to seek out other ideas about what they would like to see.”

U of M proposes bold North Side initiative

Lauretta Dawolo

The corner of Penn and Plymouth avenues in North Minneapolis has been vacant for quite some time. Many remember the McDonald’s on that corner or a mini-mall with small minority-owned businesses that once filled this space as part of a major economic corridor. Today, the land has an uncertain future, but the University of Minnesota foresees it as the center of its Northside Initiative.

The Northside Initiative is a collaborative effort that proposes to address the long-term strength and vitality of North Minneapolis by way of education, business and economic development, and health. “The university decided to do their own work and had a desire to have a presence in the community by aligning resources and devising a comprehensive urban agenda,” said Robert Jones, senior vice president of system academic administration at the University of Minnesota.

Corner stores under fire

Lauretta Dawolo

Neighbors on Minneapolis’ Northside have launched an “Action Against Corner Stores Campaign” demanding that local convenience stores stop the sale of drug paraphernalia, keep their stores clean and sanitary, and improve security around the stores by discouraging loitering and installing adequate lighting and cameras. But the City’s response to the problem has been lagging.

There seems to be a lot of “passing the buck” among the business owners targeted by the Action Against Corner Stores Campaign. “[The owners] have sold to their cousins,” said Jennifer Baxa, a member of ACORN’s Northside Neighbors United! “Now they can say in their defense that the complaints are not their problem, but that of the previous owner. Each store is independently operated and no one takes responsibility.”

‘Mother Mary’ celebrates 90 years in theater

Lauretta Dawolo

Mary Majesta Thomas has been acting for eight years. But she’s no ordinary actress — she is 90 years young.

Mother Mary, as she is affectionately called, has graced the stage of Interact Center for Visual and Performing Arts, starring in numerous productions and at least twenty national and international tours to add to her résumé called life.

Given the name Majesta by her grandmother, Mother Mary was born on March 21, 1916 in Pittsburgh, PA. She attended the 5th Ave High School and married a postal worker named Frank Thomas. They moved to Chicago, where she worked as a beauty operator. She lived there for 47 years, until her husband died of kidney failure and a stroke. Soon after, her only child, local musician, Carei Thomas became ill and was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune neurological disease called Guillain-Barre Syndrome. Thomas happened to be Interact’s first musical director.

Residents demand cleanup of corner stores
