This week in Saint Paul: Monday, November 17–Sunday, November 23, 2014

First off, thanks to everyone who joined us and gave us a shout-out for Give to the Max Day. Along with the promise of a slight warm-up, that support is helping me start this week with hopes for more great happenings and being released from last week’s winter air. It is a luxury to reach toward Thanksgiving without snow and without cold, but it seems that we are due for a small treat if not a bask in comfort as we approach my favorite holiday. The weather frustrated some of the events in last week’s arts calendar. I think that means we have to appreciate this week even more. Continue Reading

This week in Saint Paul: Monday, November 3–Sunday, November 9, 2014

Tomorrow, November 4, is election day. If you are reading this, I hope you go to vote, if you have not already. I am going to tell you about a bunch of things I think you should do this week. When we show up around town, participate, co-create and enjoy our neighbors, our community, our culture, and our arts, we immeasurably improve the spaces in which we tread. Continue Reading

This week in Saint Paul: Monday, October 27–Sunday, November 2, 2014

Every time I look at the Almanac arts calendar, I realize how much I’m missing. It’s not that I am not doing anything, although I have spent some evenings at home (doing work, of course, right?), and I have been spotted a couple of times within the boundaries of the other Twin. It’s just that there’s too much going on and too many great creatives lighting up the night and day skies of the Capital City, in every neighborhood and on every day of the week. And each week it is hard to make recommendations among some great events. Continue Reading

This week in Saint Paul: Monday, October 20–Sunday, October 26, 2014

Polar vortex. El Niño. El Niña. Swirling weather concoctions made it nice to get out and enjoy our fair city. We will see what this week brings, as far as sun and warmth and cold and beautiful colors. Who knows how long before it gets cold and icy, but we will continue to have great reasons to get out and great things and people to see. I have a few ideas for this week. Maybe you have some, too. This week in Saint Paul: Monday, October 13–Sunday, October 19, 2014

Last week was a big arts week for Saint Paul, with the first three readings of the Almanac Literary Festival and the the Fall Art Crawl. We are pretty busy this week too. There are more events in the Literary Festival and the second The Way We See It: A Fresh Look at Vision Loss, a groundbreaking anthology from Vision Loss Resources created with the help of the Almanac’s unique editor process. This week in Saint Paul: Monday, October 6–Sunday, October 12, 2014

It was nice to be spoiled by the lovely sun and some warmth so late in the season, but last week’s chill and rain told me two things: one is that I have to go into some warm coffee shops and bookstores for the 2015 Saint Paul Almanac Literary Festival. The second is that we have to hope and pray for great weather for the Saint Paul Art Crawl this weekend! Continue Reading

This week in Saint Paul: Monday, September 29–Sunday October 5, 2014

My Minnesota mind cannot help but wonder if we are going to be “punished” for the abundance of beautiful weather that has greeted the many wonderful activities in the Capital City. One look at the Almanac arts calendarand that imposed pennance is not in sight. The summer officially ended under the cover of a deceptive sun and a couple of kind, brief sprinkles of rain. That’s great momentum to carry us into this week. Continue Reading

This week in Saint Paul: Monday, September 22–Sunday 28, 2014

I would like to call this moment in time a “breather”: a time for us to pause and smile after a very huge and successful book release party, a very busy weekend for Storymobile at both the Selby Avenue Jazz Fest and Seitu Jones’s Create: A Community Table, and so many things that have been going on in Saint Paul over the past several weeks. Soon, the Almanac Literary Festival will begin. We will be busy all over town, sharing stories and meeting our neighbors all over again. In this in-between time, we keep busy with other things. I have some ideas here, and you can find more in the Almanac arts calendar. Continue Reading

This week in Saint Paul: Monday, September 15–Sunday 21, 2014

Our neighbors are fabulous and brought that to Thursday’s book release party, as they do to everything Saint Paul. Even though the festiveness of the summer weather is escaping, our warmth and energy were enough to make it a great gathering. I hope you had a chance to get your copy of the 2015 Saint Paul Almanac. If not, there are still many chances, at our local coffee shops, bookstores, and even at the airport (a great idea as you are headed out of town to meet people who need to know Saint Paul). The community of arts events continues. Just check out the Almanac arts calendarand keep reading! Continue Reading
