The third weekend in July and Carnival makes an appearance in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. Carifest is a family style Caribbean celebration with music and dancing, and food booths to complete the flavor. The roots are the celebrations held in the islands throughout the Caribbean.
For 16 years now, Minnesota citizens with deep connections to the Caribbean islands have put together a party that commemorates the islands of their origin. A pleasant rivalry exists about the best island, but a unity prevails that Carifest is the best celebration of the people. The music is a range of Soca, Calypso, Chutney, cadence, Reggae all with the infectious rhythms causing movement throughout the crowd.

And with the traditions of the Islands, our local carnival hold a Mas Parade. People are invited to costume up and join the parade as the DJs pump out the sound. A costumed dance line pulsates down the boulevard. The spectators can join in and continue the dance party on the street.

This year I noticed that some festive wear was available for doning by new participants.
