The Midtown Greenway Coalition took home the Neighborhood Project of the Year Award today at the 2011 Ninth Ward Awards ceremony hosted by Gary Schiff.
The Coalition has been instrumental in the effort to keep new high voltage transmission lines proposed by Xcel Energy out of the Midtown Greenway corridor.
The Coalition, represented by Paula Maccabee, of Just Change Law, achieved a victory in the ruling by administrative law judge Beverly Heydinger, which recommends the lines not be overhead lines, and that they be buried under 28th Street and not below the Greenway.
The matter is not yet finally decided, however. Stay tuned for more developments: Midtown Greenway Coalition.
Here’s the write up from the Award Ceremony:
Project of the Year – High Voltage Lines Struggle
In April 2009, Xcel Energy submitted plans to the Public Utilities
Commission that routed two high voltage power lines along the Midtown Greenway. The Midtown Greenway Coalition hit the ground organizing to prepare testimony for the PUC and to make their case at the hearings, that the power lines should be buried under 28th Street instead. Their hard work was rewarded when the administrative law judge rules on the side of the neighborhoods and said the lines should be buried beneath 28th Street. The Midtown Greenway Coalition has provided a voice for all the neighborhoods along the Midtown Greenway affected by the proposed high voltage power line and for leading a fight that will benefit all neighborhoods.
