From beginning to end

Whether you follow a number of bills or just a few, you don’t have to physically be at the Capitol to track legislation. Through the Legislature’s Web site (www.leg.mn), there are several ways to follow a bill from your computer. Personalized tracking The MyBills service allows a user to personalize bill tracking for current legislation, and be notified by e-mail of the bill’s movement through the process. New scam in metro area

Please be advised that a new type of scam is appearing in the metro area.A victim receives a phone call late at night (usually after midnight) from a person claiming to be from a credit card company. The person states that they are investigating possible fraudulent use of the victim’s credit card. The unknown suspects then attempts to have the victim provide the credit cards number for verification.The victim who most likely was sleeping and may be a bit disoriented then provides the information believing that the call is legitimate. Pandemic and panic: Swine flu questions and answers

The media has been saturated with swine flu news. Here’s our round-up of questions and answers and a list of places to go for information, including some of the big swine flu news centers, official sources, and some lesser-known information. The local angle: Minnesota has one suspected case of swine flu in Cold Spring, as of April 29, and local officials closed schools as a precaution. Official Minnesota, however, wants a name change for the new virus. Instead of “swine flu,” Minnesota’s Health Commissioner, Dr. Sanne Magnan, is calling it “H1N1 novel influenza.” Officials are responding to fears that are driving pork prices down, pointing out that you don’t get swine flu from eating pork. Minnesota Reading Corps looking for new recruits

The Minnesota Reading Corps, the celebrated early childhood literacy program , is looking for 500 new recruits, and one of them could be you! Staffed by AmeriCorps members who serve 1- or 2-year terms of service, MRC uses a slew of research-based techniques to greatly improve the reading skills of students “age three through grade three,” according to Anna Peters, MRC’s recruiting and outreach coordinator. MRC also includes volunteers, who commit to a minimum of one hour per week for 15 weeks. “Every day is different,” said Kris Jackson, an MRC member in North Branch, MN who’s finishing her second year of service tutoring second-graders. “The kids are always excited to see you, though, and they’re happy to learn!”MN Reading Corps: Members and volunteersMinnesota Reading Corps MEMBERS commit to a year of service that begins in August.
