Fall Sights
The rich autumn hues can be found in abundance in and around the Twin Cities. Stillwater, for example, recently placed third on Travel & Leisure Magazine’s list of “America’s Best Towns for Fall Colors.”
This year, experts are predicting a beautiful but short burst of fall color. Luckily, the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) publishes a handy guide (above) to assist in finding the best times for viewing. Also check the “Fall Finder” map, which tracks the progression of the changing leaves with daily updates.
City Parks: Highland Park, Mears Park, and Hidden Falls Park are known for offering great autumn scenery in St Paul. Minnehaha Park, Theodore Wirth, and Gold Medal Park, are a few choice spots in Minneapolis. Add your favorite park in the comment section below.
State Parks: Many of the State Parks, like Fort Snelling, offer great autumn activities. Visit this listing to find one near you.
Boat rides: Check the Padelford Riverboat calendar to find a date and time enjoy the fall hues along the Mississippi River. Another great option is the Stillwater Fall Colors Cruise, a 6 1/2 cruise that includes a delicious buffet meal.
Trails & Tours: Wear your comfortable shoes and take the Summit Avenue Walking Tour in St. Paul, which offers beautiful sights and interesting insight into the historic neighborhood. The Magic History tour, a Segway tour in Minneapolis, is another fun way to experience fall colors around Nicollet Island, St. Anthony and other areas while giving your feet a rest!
Train rides: Northshore Scenic Railroad’s 6 hour “Fall Colors Tour” along Lake Superior was named as one of the “Top 5 in America” for fall foliage train rides. Visit the website for details.
Excited to take fall snaps? Here’s a helpful tip courtesy of photographer Michael Clemmer quoted in Travel & Lesiure magazine:
“Autumn leaves are nature’s stained glass,” says professional photographer Michael Clemmer, whose images have appeared in National Geographic Society publications, and calendars around the world. “They can be beautiful in moody muted light or when brightly lighted from behind.”
If you want to photograph autumn in all of its deciduous glory, he cautions: “Don’t shoot in the middle of the day unless it’s cloudy because the bright sun washes out color. Morning and evening light are best.”
Fall Flavors
Much is made about the return of pumpkin spice lattes and the like, but if you’re not a coffee drinker, there are other ways to get your pumpkin fix! There’s nothing like a scoop of pumpkin flavored ice cream on a warm autumn day. Sebastian Joe’s (Upton Ave. location) and Grand Ole Creamery (St. Paul location) are currently offering pumpkin-flavored ice cream. In October, Pumphouse Creamery will bring back their popular “Pumpkin ice” flavor, an all-natural ice cream made with Minnesota-grown Long Island Cheese Squash. Izzy’s Ice Cream also offers a tasty pumpkin ice cream in October.
If you’re in the mood for pumpkin flavored pancakes and can’t find a seat at the ever-crowded Al’s Breakfast in Dinkytown, give Bon Vie in St. Paul a try. Also, both Longfellow Grill in Minneapolis and the Highland Grill in St. Paul offer pumpkin pancakes in October. Other fun options are the pumpkin buckwheat waffles or caramel apple French toast at Hot Plate in Minneapolis!
